June 5 – July 14 (1st rehearsal June 5: performances from June 23 - July 14) PLEASE NOTE ALL CHARACTERS HAVE A BRITISH ACCENT (except Antonio)
FIONA – 23-year old daughter of the household, witty and whip-smart. Headstrong, independent.
KATHERINE CUMBERLAND – 50s/60s, member of the aristocracy. domineering, social climber
HAROLD CUMBERLAND – 50s/60s. Kindly, Eager to please
TOM – 25-year-old member of the aristocracy. Smart, sensitive and a bit pushy
EDWARD – a wealthy young lord masquerading as a gardener. A somewhat spoiled dandy but very sweet and likable
CLARICE – Edward's sister, a missionary. 30ish. Sanctimonious spinster
ANTIONIO – A middle-aged Italian gardener. Handsome, charming seducer of women. Insightful and wise. (ITALIAN ACCENT)

ANGELA’S MIXTAPE

July 3 – August 11 (1st rehearsal July 3, performances from July 21 - August 11)
ALL CHARACTERS ARE AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN.
Each actor should be able to carry a tune.
EISA – Character ages 14-30 in the play. Central character. Niece to Angela. A strong-willed woman on a journey of self-discovery and awakening.
ANGELA – Character ages 30s – 50s in the play. She is the radical woman known to the public, but this role highlights her family role as beloved aunt to Eisa.
MOMMY – Character ages 40s-60s in the play. Free spirited in her personal life; practices law in her professional life. A caring parent who isn’t afraid of expressing her own opinions.
CESS track – late teens - older, plays fellow niece of Angela and others
GRANDMA track – plays 40’s- 60s plays grandmother, fought for civil rights, and others
The play is a “mixtape”, jumping from one scene to the next, proceeding primarily by rhythm or melody. The text is not only spoken, but sometimes sung.

July 31 – September 8 (1st rehearsal July 31, performances from August 18 - September 8)
ALL CHARACTERS USE SIGN LANGUAGE (except Miss Hall)
MR. EZRA LAMBERT – 40s (hearing) Signs fluently. Owns the Chilmark General Store and runs it with the help of his daughter. He fought as a young man in the civil war, with his best friend, Nate Smith. He is illiterate. His wife died early leaving him with a young daughter to raise alone.
MISS ANNE LAMBERT – 20s (deaf) Signs fluently. Graduated from American School for the Deaf two years ago. She is an independent, forthright young woman who has proposed the idea to start a school in Chilmark for all the children, deaf and hearing. She has asked Miss Sarah Hall to assist with a proposal.
CAPTAIN NATHANIEL SMITH – 40s (deaf) Signs fluently. Is a former whaling captain who lost his job. He is a survivor of horrendous hardship on the seas and has moved back to the island and found himself a young wife. He has twin boys, aged four – one deaf and one hearing. He is known island wide for his vivid storytelling.
MRS. ELIZABETH ATHEARN – 50s - 60s (hearing) Signs fluently. Is the widow of a prominent Islander, sells eggs, makes dresses and has a huge, warm heart “everyone’s mother”, She has been a midwife, babysitter and nanny to more than one generation in Chilmark.
MISS SARAH HALL – 30s - 40s (hearing) Has some signing ability. An unmarried, strong-willed woman, she has made educating the deaf to speak her mission. She believes in the “German Method”, which insists there be no signing support for learning to speak. She makes a proposal at the Chilmark town meeting.

HANNY KHARO – 33 (F), an Afghan-British journalist
