Breakdown

SEEKING

WOMEN

MA RAINEY:
40s. African-American. One of the earliest blues singers, and one of the first African American singers to record with a white label, Georgia-born Gertrude “Ma” Rainey was known as the Mother of the Blues. An outspoken, if not difficult, artist. She’s a star—and everyone knows it. She’s also a realist about her music, and her worth; she refuses to pander to popular taste, and she’s fiercely protective of her artistic integrity. Her manner is simple and direct, and she carries herself in a royal fashion. Must be able to sing.

DUSSIE MAE:
20s. African-American. Ma Rainey’s companion. Ambitious. Although she’s with Ma, she’s willing to entertain Levee’s advances when he makes a play for her. Her greatest asset is the sexual energy which seems to flow from her.

MEN

STURDYVANT:
50s-60s. Ma Rainey’s white producer, he is the owner of the Chicago recording studio where the play is set. Preoccupied with money, he is insensitive to black performers and prefers to deal with them at arm’s length.

SYLVESTER:
20s. African-American. An Arkansas country boy. He wears a new suit and coat, in which he is obviously uncomfortable. Most of the time, he stutters when he speaks. Ma wants him to do the introduction on the “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” record, but his stutter causes conflict with the rest of the band.

POLICEMAN:
20-40s. White. An officer of the law, but not above taking a bribe.
