Equity actors for roles in KING LEAR (See breakdown).
Even as the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival (NDSF) highlights its record of inclusive representation on stage, we have a moral and intellectual obligation to acknowledge our own harmful practices. Because we value diverse voices in the shared experience of storytelling, NDSF engages with prospective colleagues to create a more equitable industry and is working internally toward a continuous achievement of true equity.

KING LEAR (he/him, 60s+, open ethnicity) - King of Britain. A King of great power and authority with access to volatility and childlike impulsivity. Both a tyrant and a child. A deep rage simmers underneath what is perceived as helplessness. Strong with verse text, open to all different physical abilities due to age and/or other circumstances.
CORDELIA/FOOL (she/her, 20s-30s, open ethnicity) - Youngest daughter of KING LEAR. Is tracked with FOOL as CORDELIA undercover. As CORDELIA she is the representation of love. Heart-centered, a woman of integrity and honesty. Though virtuous to a fault, she is not naive and sees things for what they are. Will stand for what she believes is right. As FOOL, playful, expressive, wise, and effortless in her comedic sensibilities. Musical experience (singing, playing an instrument) a plus. Please highlight musical abilities in the submission and proficiency. Strong with verse text.
EARL OF GLOUCESTER (he/him, 40s-50s, open ethnicity) - Nobleman close to KING LEAR. Father of EDMUND and EDGAR. A man of both great emotional depth and wit. Loyal and self-sacrificing on his journey of great suffering that will lead him to the truth. Strong with verse text.
GONERIL (she/her, 40s-50s, open ethnicity) - Eldest daughter of KING LEAR. Extremely ambitious, ruthless, and clever. Her relationship with her father is layered and complicated as she does not know how to watch him decline. Covering her deep well of sadness and fear with disgust, calculated manipulation and charm. Strong with verse text.
REGAN (she/her, 30s-40s, open ethnicity) - Second daughter of KING LEAR. Competitive and just as clever as GONERIL. A bit more harsh and cruel when it comes to LEAR’s condition with a bit more access to volatility and need for vengeance. Strong with verse text.
EDMUND (he/him, 20s-30s, open ethnicity) - Younger and illegitimate son of GLOUCESTER. Cunning, charming and calculated. Highly intelligent and one step ahead of others. His need for power and vengeance comes from being othered and rejected. Strong with verse text.
EDGAR (he/him, 20s-30s, open ethnicity) - Legitimate son of GLOUCESTER and half brother to EDMUND.
EARL OF KENT (he/him, 40s-50s, open ethnicity) - Loyal and honest advisor to KING LEAR.
DUKE OF ALBANY (he/him, 40s-50s, open ethnicity) - Kindhearted and honest husband to GONERIL.
DUKE OF CORNWALL (he/him, 30s-40s, open ethnicity) - Cruel and power-hungry husband to REGAN.
KING OF FRANCE (he/him, 30s-40s, open ethnicity) - Honorable and moral husband to CORDELIA.
DUKE OF BURGUNDY (he/him, 30s-40s, open ethnicity) - Opportunistic nobleman of KING LEAR.
OSWALD (he/him, 30s-50s, open ethnicity) - Loyal steward and chief servant to GONERIL.
DOCTOR (he/him, 40s-50s, open ethnicity) - Trusted Doctor to KING LEAR.
CURAN (he/him, 30s-50s, open ethnicity) - Loyal servant to GLOUCESTER.
OLD MAN (he/him, 60s+, open ethnicity) - Wise observer with keen insight on humanity within the play.
