Project Overview / Synopsis:

Prospect Theater Company seeks actor-musicians to participate as understudies in the NYC premiere of Lizard Boy, an original musical with book, music and lyrics by Justin Huertas, directed by Brandon Ivie. Lizard Boy is a contemporary myth that uses comic book tropes to investigate and redefine our concepts of superheroes, monsters, and power. Equal parts action-adventure and coming-of-age romantic comedy, the show engages with themes of otherness, identity and empowerment. It is performed by a three-person cast accompanying themselves on guitar, cello, piano, ukulele, and a variety of other instruments.

The story is set in an alternate version of now and takes place in downtown Seattle on the night of Monster Fest, an annual (fictional) cult festival. Locals dress up in lizard costumes to commemorate an event from twenty years ago: Mount St. Helens erupted, a dragon emerged from the ashes, landed on the playground at an elementary school, and was slaughtered in a brutal battle—splattering dragon blood onto six unwitting school kids. Our central character, Trevor, was one of these children, and his skin turned scaly and green. He became known as “Lizard Boy” and spends his days alone, away from the world’s perceptions of him.

Monster Fest is the one night of the year when Trevor can go out unnoticed amongst the people in costume. After awakening from an unsettling dream, Trevor decides to venture out, and takes his chances on Grindr. He meets Cary – a newcomer to Seattle. Trevor and Cary go on a date to a concert by a rocker named Siren, a mysterious and compelling figure who Trevor recognizes from his dream. As the evening unfolds, Trevor grows closer to Cary, and Siren’s true identity is revealed. Siren has had a vision of the dragons’ returning at dawn – and asks Trevor to join her in fighting them. As dawn approaches – will Trevor be able to save himself, Cary, Siren and the world?

SEEKING:

Actor-musicians who move well, to serve as understudies for the following roles. All tracks play instruments as indicated and should be comfortable with basic fight choreography.

TREVOR (he/him, non-white, 25) Reclusive and neurotic singer-songwriter and sketch artist whose youthful, sometimes naïve optimism and his dry sense of humor masks his pain. Has green lizard skin. Goes on a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. Tenor. Plays cello, guitar, ukulele.

CARY (he/him, white, late 20s) Charismatic and confident singer-songwriter whose goofiness makes him charming and whose emotional literacy makes him sexy AF. Trevor's love interest. Having comedic skills a plus. Baritenor. Plays advanced guitar, ukulele, piano, glockenspiel, also be able to beatbox.

SIREN (she/her, any ethnicity, 25) Magnetic and weird rock singer-songwriter. We meet her jaded and resigned but soon see the terrifying drive simmering beneath the tattoos. Her past and future is bound to Trevor's. Strong sense of dark comedy. Mezzo soprano / rock belter. Plays basic piano, basic guitar, ukulele, melodica, various percussion instruments.
