BREAKDOWN
The year is 2068 and NASA has discovered a new planet with properties similar to Earth, named YOLO 6! Three 5th grade students are challenged to enter a contest that NASA is holding to choose the first civilians to become citizens of this planet and start over in this new world. As we follow three students on their storytelling journey, we learn about the challenges in their home lives, and discover their reasons for wanting (or not wanting) to leave this planet and how they can help in created a better world on YOLO 6. Through their new-found friendship, this individual mission turns them into a team of thinkers ready to lift off on a new path.
All roles are performed by adult actors.
All ethnicities encouraged to audition.
IDA (Female, to play 9): Super smart, creative, and ambitious, but also somewhat socially awkward. She’s skipped a grade which makes her the only 9 year old in the 5th grade. She knows everything there is to know about YOLO 6 and is working on a water extraction and purification method to create drinkable water on the new planet. She wants to go to YOLO 6 is order to make a better life for herself and her mother who was brilliant but overlooked and underappreciated in her field of study, and is also Ida’s personal hero.
LEO (Male, to play 10): The kid who seems to have it all. His father is the biggest name in cutting edge technology and his mother has the most trusted face in Media. Although Leo’s parents love him very much and provide him with all the best tools for success, he only gets to see them through his daily virtual Mama Mail. Leo is a member of also every extracurricular activity that the school offers. He is keeping his options open, but is feeling pressure from his over achieving parents to choose a life path. Leo likes the idea of going to YOLO 6, but doesn’t know what he talents he has to bring to a new world. Acts as translator and negotiator between Ida and Cal.
CAL (Female, to play 10): Short for Calypso, Cal is a pre-teen rebel and technological whiz kid. She has been known to use her hacking skills to hack into the schools grading system and lunch menu, but now mostly uses her talent to make extra money helping the technologically impaired – old people. Cal’s parents aren’t around. She lives her grandmother, and all of her friends are online friends, so she can turn them off whenever she wants to. Cal has zero interest in going to YOLO 6. She does not understand why we would want to abandon Earth for a new one when there is still so much we can do for this one.
CARINA/ADULTS (Female, 30’s – 40’s): the world’s most reliable cloud-bases assistant. Invented by Leo’s father, Carina is part modern day “Alexa”, part DJ, part mission control and entirely awesome. Also plays
BROADCASTER, Leo’s mom, the most trusted face in media, Ms. W, the 5th grade science teacher who makes NASA’s YOLO 6 challenge a team-building school project, Grammie G, Cal’s grandmother, and Dr. D., Ida’s scientist/activist mother.
