PREPARATION

Please prepare one 2-3 minute monologue (comedic or dramatic); if you’d like to present both a comedic and dramatic monologue then both monologues must be under 3 minutes total.

Please bring a picture and resume, stapled together.

SCURIUS – [Male, 40s-60s] Great old Gray Squirrel. Big. Fatish. The greatest gatherer of nuts the forest ever saw. Now gone to seed. Father to CHORDATA. Partner to MAMALIA. Adopted father to RODENTIA.

SCUIRIDAE/SCIENTIST – [Male, 30s-40s]Gray Squirrel.Like Riki-Tiiki-Tavi. He is too smooth. He might stare too long. He is creepy. Also plays SCIENTIST. He is a scientist. Not a real scientist. A cartoon scientist.

CHORDATA – [Female, 20s-30s] Young Gray Squirrel. Squirrel sexy. Squirrel smart. She knows the forest is changing. She is in love with CAROLINIUS. Perhaps a little too sentimental.

MAMALIA – [Female, 40s-60s] Older Gray Squirrel. The long suffering partner to SCURIUS. She loves him. Knows his faults. Has aided his schemes. She is dedicated to her daughter and wants only the best for her.

RODENTIA – [Female, 20s-30s] Adopted daughter of SCURIUS. Young Fox Squirrel. She swims with the tide that raises her boat.

CAROLINIUS – [Male, 20s-30s] Young Fox Squirrel. Fierce. Strong. Idealistic, but hungry. It is, after all, the dead of winter and mating season is coming.

RENIA – [Female, 40s] Polish. We see her in the past and in the present. A landlady who once sought refuge in the building she now owns. In the past we see her as lost and careful, eager to please, the newcomer. In the present she is in charge, no nonsense. Trying to disguise a great emotional need in a tough exterior. Speaks English with a Polish accent and speaks in Polish in one scene.

INNA/TANYA – [Female, late 20s-30s] Ukrainian. Resilient, stubborn, determined, dangerous when pushed. Also trying to disguise a great emotional need in a tough exterior. On a quest. Punches a lady in the face in the first scene. Speaks English with a Ukrainian accent and a few lines in Ukrainian. Also plays TANYA - Ukrainian. Inna’s mother, we see her in the past.

PELAGIYA – [Female, 30s] Belarusian. Calculated and careful - always on the lookout for someone trying to screw her. She’s the senior tenant in the building in 2001. The know-it-all who needs to always be on top. Speaks English with a Belarusian accent

AAMANI – [Female, 40s] Afghan. Elegant, grounded. She’s the second most senior tenant in 2001. Very aware, observant, and intelligent. Clear-eyed but also longing for beauty and poetry. Careful. Speaks English with an Afghani accent.

ISABELA/GLENYS – [Female, 20s] Honduran. Except for Renia, she is the newest tenant in 2001, and is about to leave unexpectedly to return to Honduras. She has a clear-eyed perspective and deep love for her family. Loyal and caring but will put you in your place, if need be. Speaks English with a Honduran accent and speaks some Spanish. Also plays GLENYS, 20s, Honduran-American. Isabela’s daughter. Very smart, kinetic, full of energy. A tenant in 2012.

LERA/JOAN – [Female, 30s] Ukrainian. Inna's closest friend in Ukraine. Determined but often falls short. Cares very much - both for people and for the things she can't quite win in in life. Speaks English with an Ukranian accent and some lines in the play in Ukrainian. Also plays JOAN, 30’s. American. A waitress in a diner who’s lived a lot and seen a lot. Major sass.

AGATA – [Female, 30s] Polish. Comes to exact some revenge one night. Speaks English with a Polish accent and speaks in Polish in one scene. WOMAN, 30s, another tenant in 2012.

LORD BUCKINGHAM – [Male, early 30s-mid 40s] any ethnicity. Accomplice of Richard III. And Others.

ANNE NEVILLE – [Female, 20s-30s] any ethnicity. Daughter Warwick Leader. Inherited vast amounts of land. Locked in tower by King Edward IV. Eventual wife of Richard III. And Others.

CLINE (CAROLINE)– [Female, 60ish-43ish]Jewish American, or rather Russian and German sister to Estelle, mother to none, wife to John

JOHN– [Male, 60ish-43ish, flexible] African American, or rather Jamaican and Ghanian descent, husband to Cline.

TAHEEM– [Male,30s-20s] Muslim American, Turkish and Pakistani descent, gay, husband to Jim.

POP-POP– [Male, 80-60]German-Jewish immigrant father to Estelle and Cline, grandfather to Roweena and Jim.
