Breakdown

LILLI/KATHERINE:
30-50, strong mezzo soprano / legit soprano. She is a star of stage and screen: proud, haughty, much like her character “Katherine” in Taming of the Shrew, She is also vulnerable, very sensual and capable of romance. She is the ex-wife of Fred and engaged to Harrison Howell. Actor should be well versed in both Shakespearean text and physical & verbal comedy.

FRED/PETRUCHIO:
30-50, strong baritone, commanding presence. He is a true impresario in the style of John Barrymore, He plays “Petruchio”. He is also Lilli’s ex-husband. Actor should be well versed in both Shakespearean text and physical & verbal comedy.

BILL/LUCENTIO:
20-30, strong tenor or bari-tenor. He is a ne’er-do-well actor, who has a bit of a gambling problem. He’s a Broadway hoofer, so should have terrific dance ability. He also plays “Lucentio in The Taming of the Shrew.

GANGSTER ONE:
30-50+ comic baritone or tenor. He is the archetypical gangster complete with accent. Does some soft shoe in “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” so should move well. Also appears in The Taming of the Shrew(unexpectedly).

GANGSTER TWO:
Qualities the same as the First Man, but a bit more reserved and dryer of wit.

HATTIE:
Any age, good voice. She is Lilli’s dresser and sings ”Another Op’nin’, Another Show” and “Too Darn Hot”. She opens the show, so possesses a terrific belt and has great charisma and stage presence.

PAUL:
Any age, tenor or bari-tenor. He is Fred’s dresser and is the featured singer/dancer in “Too Darn Hot” so he should sing and move well.

FLYNT/GREMIO:
any age, tenor or baritenor. Actors who appear in The Taming of the Shrew. They will also sing in the ensemble in “Too Darn Hot”. Both are featured in several numbers including “Tom, Dick, & Harry” so should sing and move well with terrific stage presence.

RILEY/HORTENSIO:
any age, tenor or baritenor. Actors who appear in The Taming of the Shrew. They will also sing in the ensemble in “Too Darn Hot”. Both are featured in several numbers including “Tom, Dick, & Harry” so should sing and move well with terrific stage presence.

ENSEMBLE:
To represent character parts including: Pops/Padua Priest, Ralph (the SM), Stagehand, Cab Driver/Nathaniel & Philip, Stagehand, Dance Captain, Driver for Howell/Gregory, Haberdasher Wardrobe lady/ensemble singer, Ensemble singer/Padua Inn waitress
