ROBERT STANLEY LAWERY
(MALE, 40’s, African American) Several years pass in the course of the play. The actor ages from 35 to 50. Robert is handsome, and mature beyond his years in thought and demeanor, a true leader. He is a high school English teacher and counselor in Louisville, Kentucky working on his PhD in philosophy at Indiana University in Bloomington, when he is called into the United States Army Air Corp. This is the segregated world of WWII. He is not a pilot, but he will become a part of the Tuskegee Experiment. There is a poetry about him that is stunted by his nature to be efficient, thorough and exacting. An ACADEMIC who becomes surprisingly enamored with the MILITARY, He is engaged to Katherine Louise Cole.
