BREAKDOWN
This engaging adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s epic story of a spirited young woman in a man’s world searching for a sense of self comes from the award-winning Shared Experience Theatre Company in the U.K. Orphaned Jane overcomes a rough start in life to become an accomplished governess at the mysterious home of Mr. Rochester. Passions grow between them when a secret is revealed, threatening Jane’s hopes for the future.
Note: We are seeking eight excellent actors of ALL races and ethnicities to play over twenty roles. The ability to play the following instruments in a folk or classical style is a plus: violin, viola, cello, clarinet, oboe, and flute. Actors who play guitar may also be considered. Please note that actors must be available for both productions.
SEEKING:
Rochester:
(40. Any ethnicity) A fierce mind, a quick wit, doesn’t suffer fools lightly, physically strong, active and bold, not in any way traditionally handsome, yet his commanding presence has a sensuality all his own. Also plays John Reed, a petulant child.
Jane Eyre:
(Early 20’s. Any ethnicity) Never afraid to speak her mind, never feels the need to please or charm, yet there is an absolute devotion to being authentic and kind and a love for the forgotten, the thrown away, the tread-up… but in no way does she seem ‘saintly.’ She’s just a strong woman who knows who she is and knows no other way to be.
Bertha:
(30’s-40’s. Any ethnicity) Bertha is both Rochester’s first wife, who has been locked away in the attic because she is raving mad, as well as Jane’s inner spirit, her Id, her soul. She is with Jane on every step of her journey. Though she only has a few powerful lines at the top of the play, Bertha is on stage for the entire play, responding physically to what she sees and hears. The role requires a strong actor who can move, who can be physically daring and stunningly present in every moment.
Reed/Fairfax plus Ensemble Female Track:
(40-55(ish) Any Ethnicity) Plays Mrs. Reed, a stern and with-holding matriarch and Mrs Fairfax, a warm and loving housekeeper, as well as many other ensemble roles. Looking for versatile actors with lots of imagination and ‘team players’ spirit. Ability to play a musical instrument a plus.
Brocklehurst/Pilot/Lord Ingram/Rivers plus Ensemble Male Track:
(30-55(ish). Any Ethnicity) Plays Brocklehurst, a stern and puritanical school principle, Pilot the dog, Lord Ingram, a jovial English land-owner and St. John Rivers, a kind, modest clergyman devoted to serving God. Looking for versatile actors with lots of imagination and ‘team players’ spirit. Ability to play a musical instrument a plus.
Bessie/Blanche/Grace Poole/Diana plus Ensemble Female Track:
(30’s-40’s. Any ethnicity) Plays Bessie, a kind young maid, Blanche Ingram, a snobby socialite, Grace Poole, a mysterious figure who watches over a mad woman, Diana Rivers, a kind and loving sister as well as other ensemble parts. Must be able to sing. Looking for versatile actors with lots of imagination and ‘team players’ spirit. Ability to play a musical instrument a plus.
Mason/Teacher plus Ensemble Male Track:
(30’s-60, any ethnicity) Plays Teacher, a kind soul, Mason, a man with a dark past who carries his guilt about his insane sister Bertha like a weight, and a horse, among other ensemble parts. Looking for versatile actors with lots of imagination and ‘team players’ spirit. Ability to play a musical instrument a requirement for this track.
Abigail/Helen/Adele plus Ensemble Female Track:
(Early 20’s to early 30’s, any ethnicity) Plays Abigail, a flummoxed young servant, Helen Burns a gentle and kind-hearted dying girl, Adele, a ten-year-old French girl with perfect deportment and a whole lot of joie de vivre, Mary Rivers, a loving sister as well as other ensemble parts. Looking for versatile actors with lots of imagination and ‘team players’ spirit. Ability to play a musical instrument a plus.
