SINGERS: Please prepare one brief song (a brief cut, or about a minute in length) in whatever style you feel shows you off the strongest. ACTORS: Please prepare a brief monologue (about a minute or so). Any style/era. DANCERS: If you are primarily a dancer, we will not be holding any dance auditions on this day - but encourage you to come and sing or do a monologue for seasonal consideration. Please bring ONE picture/resume for us to keep - if you don't have a professional headshot or resume, a snapshot will be fine - but something with your name, credits, training, and contact information will be terrific. If nothing else, please bring a piece of paper with your name and contact information so we know how to reach you.

Safety/Pandemic Note: The Hangar Theatre is following the guidelines of public health officials and the Center for Disease Control (CDC), in addition to all Equity requirements, in order to create a safe environment for this summer season. The Hangar is a fully vaccinated company: full vaccination (including booster for those eligible) must be completed at least two-weeks prior to the start of employment.
An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of this audition.

Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

HEIDI (ROLE IS CAST) Female, Any Race/Ethnicity, 40s. Based on the playwright, Heidi Schreck; a former debate champion who traveled the country in her teens giving speeches about the Constitution to earn prize money. Smart, engaging, witty, warm, and thoughtful. Alternates from adulthood to her 15-year-old self throughout the play.
LEGIONNAIRE/MIKE (ROLE IS CAST) Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 40s. Heidi’s scene partner; he first appears as an American Legionnaire overseeing the debate, a stickler for the rules and the structure. He becomes Heidi’s ally and partner; thoughtful, observant, and vulnerable.
TEENAGE DEBATE OPPONENT Female or Non-Binary, Any Race/Ethnicity, 14-18. A teen debater who challenges Heidi in the second half of the play. Note: Actors cast will need to have some onstage experience, as a performer/actor or in speech and debate. Two actors will be cast as debaters to split performances; local actors are encouraged to submit for this role.

BILLY ELLIOT: Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 9-12. A young person who discovers his talent and love for dance (specifically ballet) by happenstance. Charismatic, honest, intelligent. Covers his grief with anger. A strong singer and dancer with compelling stage presence and experience with both ballet and tap. Range: E3-C5.
MRS. WILKINSON: Female, Any Race/Ethnicity, 35-45. A local ballet teacher who becomes Billy's mentor and friend. Loud and outspoken, she loves dance but is anything but precious about it. She believes in the power of personal expression through dance. Range: Gb3-Bb5.
MR. ELLIOT/MINER: Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 35-50. Billy’s father, a widowed miner balancing grief and the desire to create a better life for his family. He is involved with the miner’s strike and continues to deal with the death of his wife. Range: A2-Eb4.
TONY ELLIOT/MINER: Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 18-22. Billy's older brother. Hotheaded and scrappy, also a miner. He too is dealing with his grief through anger. He expects that Billy will follow in his footsteps. Range: D3-F4.
MICHAEL CAFFREY: Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 10-14. Billy's best friend. He seeks joy and opportunities to express himself and is gender non-conforming. A strong singer and dancer with compelling stage presence and experience with both ballet and tap. Range: A#3 to B4.
GRANDMA ELLIOT: Female, Any Race/Ethnicity, 55-75. Billy's grandmother. Sometimes she lives in her own reality; honest and blunt. Range: F#3-F#4.
BILLY’S MOTHER/MINER WIFE: Female, Any Race/Ethnicity, 30-45. Billy’s mother, she died young and longs to be with her family.
DEBBIE WILKINSON/BALLET CORPS: Female, Any Race/Ethnicity, 10-14. The ballet teacher's daughter. Outspoken and gutsy, but with a soft spot for Billy. Young dancer with strong ballet and tap skills who can sing.
MR. BRAITHWAITE/POSH DAD, ENSEMBLE: Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 30-45. GEORGE/MINER: Male, Any Race/Ethnicity, 30-45.
