BREAKDOWN
Cephus Miles - Male, African-American, 20-30 .Warm & charming with an indomitable personality. Cephus abandons farm life in the South and journeys North to seek opportunity & adventure. Along the way, he is jailed for being a draft dodger, loses his family farm and lands on the streets. In the end, he returns home to reclaim his roots and rediscover love. Actor must play Cephus from his early 20’s to a middle aged man.
Woman One/Mrs Hattie Smith/ Pattie Mae Wells/Aunt Hanna & more: Female, African-American, 20-30’s) Strong, expressive actress to create multiple roles & distinctive characters throughout the play, one of which is Cephus’ first love, Pattie Mae Wells. The ability to sing & move well is a plus.
