Breakdown
NOTE: Please note we are looking to cast this ethnically diverse, so ALL are encouraged to audition for ALL roles. Please do not type yourself out! Also, and more importantly, we are looking for actors who will help breathe fresh and exciting life into this show. We are NOT looking to do what has been done before. We are looking for smart actors that can bring their own fresh takes and comedy to a role that is unique to them. We have an incredible artistic team that will be doing that on their end and we are looking for people not afraid to break the mold here.
DOLLY LEVI: Female to play 40-55 yrs. old (Belter/Mezzo). SEEKING CELEBRITY, but will consider all. Matchmaker, widow, meddler, opportunist, life-loving, commanding, gifted actor with excellent comedic timing. She is a force of nature but also must show compassion and vulnerability. Dance ability: some. We are looking to do the Barbara Streisand keys, so we are seeking someone that is an actor first, but has a huge voice to boot.
HORACE VANDERGELDER: Male to play 40-60 yrs. old (Baritone B3-E4). Well-known half-a-millionaire, widower, owns the Feed Store, gruff, set in his ways, authoritative. Seeking an excellent actor that can be rough around the edges, but likable/loveable. Dance ability: some.
CORNELIUS HACKL: Male to play 30-35 yrs. old (Baritone Bb3-F#4). Head clerk at the Feed Store, timid but energetic, enthusiastic, and adventurous. Dance ability: must move very well. Seeking an excellent actor that can deliver not only with his musical comedy hopes, but really be vulnerable and real for “It Only Takes a Moment”.
BARNABY TUCKER: Male to play 18-20 yrs. old (Lyric Baritone – 2nd Tenor C3-G#4). Assistant to Cornelius at the Feed Store, extremely timid, naïve, energized, follower. Dance ability: VERY strong dancer. This role can easily turn into a bad and annoying musical comedy sidekick. We are hoping for an honest actor that is truly invested in every moment.
IRENE MOLLOY: Female to play 30-35 yrs. old (Mezzo-Soprano, legit G3-F5). Owns a Hat Shop, widow, beautiful, smart, fun-loving. Dance ability: must move well. We are looking for someone strong and someone that can fight against playing the typical ingenue and be a smart strong woman. She has room to be quite funny and we would love to find a woman who is not only an honest and beautiful actor, but someone that has her own sense of comedy as well.
MINNIE FAY: Female to play 18-20 yrs. old (Mezzo-Soprano D4-F5). Irene’s assistant, naïve, straight-laced, fresh, excitable, a follower. Dance ability: VERY strong. She can also tend to annoy and drive people crazy. We are looking for a strong dancer that can sing, but has a strong sense of comedy. Think Jen Cody or that same type. She needs to be a comedian, but play it real and not try or push for laughs.
AMBROSE KEMPER: Male to play 18-25 yrs. old (Tenor E3-G#4). Struggling artist, good-natured, accommodating, wants to marry Ermengarde. Possibly double in ensemble. Dance ability: strong. Needs to have a great sense of comedic timing, but at playing the straight man.
ERMENGARDE: Female to play 18-20 yrs. old. Horace’s niece, diminutive, whining, high-strung, wants to marry Ambrose. Possibly will double in ensemble. Dance ability: strong. This is another one that can drive a person nuts. Looking for someone that can make a role that is written to be annoying endearing and funny. We need her likable, not the type that you want to see less of. We want her and Ambrose to be something we want to see lots more of.
ERNESTINA: Female to play 30-45 yrs. old. Accommodating, good-time girl. An eccentric looking, extreme character type from Olive Oil thin to chubby. Will double in ensemble. She needs to have a scene stealing sensibility without trying hard. She just is. Needs to be a fantastic comedian.
ENSEMBLE: (10 men, 10 women)
*NOTE: Additional featured roles not mentioned below will be cast from this group. We want people of ALL TYPES AND AGES.
RUDY: Male to play 40-60 yrs. old (Bass). Maitre’d of the Harmonia Gardens, proper, commanding. German accent required and should have a great sense of comedic timing.
JUDGE: Male to play 50-65 yrs. old. Older character type befuddled, bad-tempered, emotional. Easily moved to tears by romance.
MRS. ROSE: Female to play 40-60 yrs. old. Street vendor and a friend of Dolly’s from years before.
ENSEMBLE SINGERS: Ages 20’s – 50’s. All vocal ranges needed; gorgeous legit high tenors and sopranos to rich altos and bass/baritones. We are looking for performers of all types, ages, and ethnicities. Male and female ensemble singers who move extremely well and are strong, great actors/smart performers. Singers must move well, not everyone must dance. We are looking for people that can create real characters from nothing and be ready to dive into creating this world. We do not want people that are going to blend into the background and be forgettable. We want smart actors with glorious voices.
ENSEMBLE DANCERS: Ages 20’s – 40’s. All vocal ranges needed. Male and female trained dancers with strong technique who sing. Also looking for guys who tumble. We are looking for performers of all types, ages, and ethnicities. Must sing well and hold their own harmony. We are looking for people that can create real characters from nothing and be ready to dive into creating this world. We do not want people that are going to blend into the background and be forgettable. We want smart actors that can dance extremely well and sing. Most of the dancers need to play younger, but people that are ageless and can play to either end of the spectrum are very valuable.
