SEEKING

The production is fully cast. We are seeing possible replacements only (see breakdown).

All actors must have superb language and comic skills as well as a strong English accent.

PREPARATION

Prepare a short George Bernard Shaw monologue of your choice (it need not be from Heartbreak House). Bring picture and resume.

BREAKDOWN

ALL ROLES ARE CURRENTLY CAST.
Actors may read for any of the characters in the play.

NOTE: Heartbreak House is set in WW1 era England at the home of Captain Shotover. All actors must have superb language and comic skills as well as a strong English accent.

CAPTAIN SHOTOVER
Role CAST. (50s and up) Knowing and loving, though determined not to show it. Discouraged by the state of the world and looking for hope, which he finds with the young Ellie Dunn. Must have a strong facility with language great, powerful speaking voice. British.

ELLIE DUNN
Role CAST. (20’s) Determined, ambitious, bright. She refuses to let the struggles of life get the best of her. We watch her navigate the treacherous waters of learning to connect to her emotional life. Must have a strong facility with language. British.

HESIONE HUSHABYE
Role CAST. (40’s) Captain Shotover’s pragmatic daughter. Realizes she’s not quite ready to sink into middle age and determinedly reconnects with her passionate adventurous spirit. Must have a strong facility with language. British.

LADY UTTERWORD
Role CAST. (40’s) Captain Shotover’s extremely ambitious daughter. Appearances are everything to her. She feels she owns the entitlement of the entire British Empire and, in the course of the play, realizes she’s lost a part of her humanity in her determined struggle to attain her social standing. Must have a strong facility with language. British.

HECTOR HUSHABYE
Role CAST. (50) Hesione’s husband. Intelligent, handsome, charismatic, and charming, and highly theatrical. Plays at life rather than simply living it. Always outside looking in. Must have a strong facility with language. British.

BOSS MANGAN
Role CAST. (50’s) Having carefully created the persona of a vicious business tycoon, he is revealed to be a lost and frightened boy who has sublimated his emotional life into this single-focused goal to win at any cost. Must have a strong facility with language. British.

MAZZINI DUNN
Role CAST. (50s) A man who learned early in life to embrace the world as it is and enjoy himself with all of his shortcomings. His strength comes from having the ability to step back and gain some perspective of the world and his place in it. Ellie’s father, who trusts her to make the right decisions for herself. Must have a strong facility with language. British.

  • RANDALL UTTERWORD
    (30s) A pampered non-contributive aristocrat who has always lived for pleasure and in a dream world. Very Upper-class British
  • NURSE GUINESS
    (50 and up) The Shotover housekeeper, who knows where all the bodies are buried. Loves them all. (Any class of Brit, Irish, or Scots)
  • THE BURGLAR
    (50 and up) A hearty rough and tumble man, highly analytical, speaks with a Londoner’s East-End accent.
