2015-16 Season
AN OPENING IN TIME
World Premiere by Christopher Shinn
Director: Oliver Butler
1st reh: 8/18/2015. Opens: 9/25/2015. Closes: 10/11/2015.
Seeking:
ANNE
mid 60s. Someone who let the possibility of a whole life slip away out of fear and responsibility- but still has a quiet power and confidence. Widowed, retired from teaching high school English, she recently moved back to town to be nearer her son Sam, and to see if there’s a chance to rekindle an old romance with Ron.
GEORGE
17. A kid who had a very hard childhood, and has been shunted into the foster care system. Struggling with his identity. Angry and having trouble learning how to cope with his fear and anxiety, he is growing up in uncertain circumstances. In desperate need of a sensitive, understanding parent. Over the course of the play, comes out as transgender.
RON
mid 60s. A drama teacher whose job has been slowly reduced to directing the annual high school musical. Has trouble adjusting when even that is taken away from him. Dependent on the comforts of habit. Warm and funny, but struggles to fully face his pain and resentment, and is in denial about having let the possibility of a whole life slip away out of fear. In love with Anne.
ANETTA
40s. Polish waitress at Ron’s favorite diner. Fond of Ron, good sense of humor, flirtatious. Most of her emotional life takes place at work, and there is a loneliness underneath her facade of prickly affection. Stand-offish when she feels threatened.
FRANK
60s. A down to earth, no-nonsense man. Friends with Ron, and relies on him and Anetta for companionship when he needs to get away from home. Rants about taxes and the news as a way of dealing with dissatisfaction. Threatened by Anne’s arrival, though he covers it with humor. Angry at the fact that his town is changing and he is entering the last part of his life.
KIM
30s. Someone who’s frustrated at not being able to have the life she planned. Uncomfortable with the idea of adopting, she’s taken in foster children. Struggling with two kids potentially getting into trouble and a dissatisfied husband, and resentful towards a society that has not afforded her the opportunities she feels she deserves.
DETECTIVE
40s. Knows his town well, and has years of experience. Covers over a deep cynicism and anger about human behavior with highly disciplined professionalism.
SAM
mid 30s. Anne’s son. A high school chorus teacher who’s been arrested for having a romantic relationship with a student who consented to the romance. Profoundly angry and wounded by what he perceives to be the emotional limitations of both his parents growing up. Trying to make sense of his life and his future, but having trouble figuring out how to do so. Avoids feeling the depth of his pain by attempting to harden himself, but can't fully eliminate his hurt and longing.

JEFFRIES
a journalist. He is handsome, and it should be clear he comes from money, from one of the best families, educated at all the right schools -- he knew how to spend his money when he had it. Even in his present state there is a sense of style. His leg is immobilized in a cast.
SAM
is in his early thirties, slim and well dressed. He has a reserve that might be good manners, or it might be caution. African-American.
MR. THORWALD
a man in a well-worn suit, slicked back hair and rimless glasses.
MRS. THORWALD
a woman of beauty, but that beauty has begun to fade with age and constant worry. Doubles with GLORIA, a stunning woman and Jeffries’ ex-wife.
BOYNE
a large policeman in his late forties, balding, in a rumpled suit. The kind of guy who talks maybe a bit too loud, eats too fast, and there’s usually a bit of food on his tie.

Seeking:
ANYA
Mid 20’s: When we first meet Anya she is a lost soul but with great strength, pride, determination and dignity. As the story progresses she begins to discover her sense of self and the possibility that she may be the missing daughter of Tsar Nicholas. We are not looking for a fairy tale princess. When Anya is transformed into the beautiful Anastasia it should have the same effect and surprise as Eliza Doolittle entering the ball. Soprano with belt range. Vocal range: A3-Eb4.
DOWAGER EMPRESS
60’s-early 70’s: She is the formidable and imperious grandmother of Anastasia. Anastasia is her favorite grandchild and she loves her with all her heart. She never truly gives up the belief that her granddaughter might be alive but finally after years of enduring Anastasia pretenders she becomes hardened and bitter. It is only when she meets Anya that her old spirit begins the return. Even when she knows that Anya may not be Anastasia she realizes that we all “need our dreams and we need the truth”. Actress must have elegance, beauty and a regal bearing. Alto or actress who is very comfortable with singing. Vocal Range: F3-Bb4.
DMITRY
Mid 20’s: An opportunist trying to make it on the streets of Russia by selling stolen objects from the Tsarist past. He is the prince of St. Petersburg’s black market. He creates the scheme to find an Anastasia impersonator in order to gain the reward for her safe return. He is smooth, persuasive and a real operator. Must have a sense of danger, edginess and sex appeal. Not a typical romantic leading man although he and Anya eventually fall in love. Baritenor. Vocal range: A2-G4 (A4).
VLAD
Mid 40’s-Early 50’s: Before the revolution Vlad was a minor functionary at the empirical court. He is Dmitry’s right hand man and because of his romantic relationship with Lily he arranges a meeting between Anya and the Dowager Empress. Actor must have wit, style and be a character comedian with panache. Baritone. Vocal range: A2-F4.
GLEB
Mid-Late 30’s: A member of the Chekist secret police. A zealot with tremendous intensity and a dangerous sexuality. As the play progresses we see him rise in power and position within the political party. He is in love with Anya but would not be above killing her if necessary. Baritenor. Vocal Range: A2-Gb4.
ANASTASIA
Age 6-7: The daughter of the Tsar of Russia. A sweet and impressionable young princess. Beautiful soprano voice
