CLAUDIUS – (40-45) Male. Any ethnicity. Newly-elected King of Denmark who rose to power after the death of his brother, the former King Hamlet. Married to Gertrude, his brother’s widow and Hamlet’s mother. Calculating, ambitious, and power-hungry. *May start rehearsals on Dec 6 and rehearse for 4 days in NYC*
GERTRUDE – (50-55) Female. Any ethnicity. The Queen of Denmark. Widow of King Hamlet, newlywed wife of Claudius, and mother of Hamlet. Past her prime and determined to preserve her position in the court at all costs. Loves and cares for Hamlet deeply, but is too blinded by her lust for Claudius to concern herself with the moral ramifications of her hasty remarriage. *This role may start rehearsals a week early on Dec 6 and rehearse for 4 days in NYC*
GHOST / 1ST PLAYER / LUCIANUS / GRAVEDIGGER – (60s-70s) Male. Any ethnicity. Versatile actor needed to play multiple contrasting roles. The Ghost of Hamlet’s Father is the powerful, imposing, and highly-respected former king of Denmark. 1st Player and Gravedigger roles require wit and comic ability.
OPHELIA – (18- early 20s) Female. Any ethnicity. Daughter to Polonius and sister to Laertes. In love with Hamlet. Sweet, innocent, and obedient to the men in her life. A faithful daughter and sister. *This role may start rehearsals a week early on Dec 6 and rehearse for 4 days in NYC*
HORATIO – (30s) Male. Any ethnicity. Smart with enormous affection for his friend Hamlet, possibly with a sublimated love. Tries to restrain Hamlet from his excesses. *This role may start rehearsals a week early on Dec 6 and rehearse for 4 days in NYC*
LAERTES – (early to mid-20s) Male. Any ethnicity. Polonius' son. Protective of his sister Ophelia. Passionate and impulsive, Laertes is eager to revenge the death of his father and abuse of his sister. Also athletic; Laertes is a master fencer. This role will understudy the role of Hamlet.*This role may start rehearsals a week early on Dec 6 and rehearse for 4 days in NYC*
GUILDENSTERN – (20s-30s) Male or Female. Any ethnicity. An acquaintance of Hamlet who attempts to place himself and his friend Rosencrantz in Hamlet's confidence but who is actually serving as an informant for the corrupt King Claudius
