BREAKDOWN
[HAMLET]
Mid-20's. Charismatic, sensitive, thoughtful, compelling, mercurial, daring, bold . . . brightest person in the play and the most complex. His mind is always alert and alive; his wit keen and sharp. Has the stuff to be king; loves and is loved by all; betrayed by many -- or senses that he has been. Perceptive about human nature and human behavior. Takes his time to act until he has irrefutable proof that his dead father's Ghost is not an agent of the devil sent to tempt him; springs into action; seeks vengeance while also accepting of his fate. A good actor: strategic, convincing in his madness. Needs excellent combat skills. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[GERTRUDE]
Mid-40's. In her prime. Politically astute enough to know to keep the kingdom together and preserve her position through her marriage to Claudius (though there's plenty of evidence that they may be having a love affair prior to the King's murder, and that her choice comes as much from passion as it does from practicality and self-preservation); loves and is devoted to her son, and wants to do what is in her power to do to preserve his lineage and status in the court. Ultimately chooses loyalty to her son, and has wished for him a happy match with Ophelia, even though Hamlet would marry beneath his station were they to wed. Good heart trapped in a political web. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[CLAUDIUS]
Mid-40's - mid-50's. A younger brother who takes matters into his own hands. Politician, soldier. Haunted by his decisions and his conscience, especially after Hamlet returns to court and sets about to determine Claudius's guilt and complicity in the murder of King Hamlet. Duplicitous and conniving; willing to murder to get what he needs. Loves Gertrude as much as he is capable of loving anyone; is smart enough to know that marrying her will help unify and keep in tact the kingdom. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[POLONIUS]
Mid-40's - late '50's/early '60's. The Lord Chamberlain, and the person with highest status in the court who is not of royal blood. Astute politician, very concerned with making sure his son, Laertes, maintains his status in the hierarchy and accordingly, works to secure his future. (Sends Reynaldo to spy on Laertes in Paris to make sure his son does not overstep himself and misbehave in too unseemly or improper a manner.) Less concerned with his daughter, although does not believe she will have a future with Hamlet, no matter how much he may seem to love her (Hamlet may love her, but his status will dictate his marriage, and it probably won't be to Ophelia). Controlling and conniving . . . concerned for Denmark and the court as well as for his family. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[LAERTES]
Mid-20's. Hamlet's peer. Handsome, athletic (one of the best fencers in all of Denmark, if not Europe), admired. Probably has a libertine streak, but loves his father and his sister, deeply. Smart, well-educated (his father is very concerned with Laertes' status and position in the court of Denmark and that he do nothing to undermine it). Full of fire and vengeance when his father is murdered by Hamlet; all the more so when he sees his sister in her state of madness and grief-stricken beyond repair when she is drowned. Has enough integrity to ask forgiveness just before he dies. Needs excellent combat skills. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[OPHELIA]
Early 20's. Obedient daughter to Polonius; devoted sister to Laertes; in love with Hamlet and very concerned about him, his emotional and mental health. Trapped by the code of expectations of the times: daughters are obedient. But not without a mind of her own, and a heart of her own. Her fragility, isolation, and sense of abandonment increases over the course of the play as she is deserted -- first by her brother's departure for France, next by Hamlet's irrational behavior, then by her father's murder and swift burial. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[HORATIO]
Mid/late-20's to late 30's. A scholar -- possibly a tutor -- and devoted, trusted friend to Hamlet. The only person in the play who does not betray Hamlet, either in Hamlet's mind or in reality. Fellow student (or tutor) at Wittenberg . . . calm, steady, observant, and loving; thoughtful and well-educated. A voice of moderation in a topsy-turvy, violent world. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN]
Mid-20's. Hamlet's friends since childhood and fellow students. Not of as high status in the court as Hamlet or Laertes, but definitely of the nobility enough to be at school in Wittenberg. Devoted to Hamlet, eager to be of service, but capitulate to Claudius's desires and become his pawns. Transparent; not particularly good liars. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[GHOST]
Mid-30's - late 40's. The Spirit of Hamlet's dead father, Hamlet, King of Denmark. Charismatic, admirable, and tortured. Sent to his death before he had a chance to absolve his sins. The King and father Hamlet knew as a child and young teen-ager, looked up to, revered, loved, and admired. A soldier, a scholar, a leader, a warrior. (May double with Fortinbras).ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[FORTINBRAS]
Mid-30's. Preferably, a Nordic god. The King Hamlet will never be. Soldier-warrior, politician, dedicated to his country . . . another son who wants to defend or seek vengeance for his father's fate. (May double with the Ghost). ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[PLAYER KING]
Mid-40's to mid-60's. Seasoned player; the best of his kind. A good orator; somewhat declamatory and old style, though not overly so. Loves Hamlet, and loves his job. Experienced, adaptable, adept. Strong presence and authority. (May double with 1st Gravedigger). ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[FIRST GRAVEDIGGER (ALSO CALLED FIRST CLOWN)]
Mid-50's to mid-60's. Earthy, wise, though not well-educated. Laborer, a realist, good at his job. A bit of a teacher/mentor and something of an observer-philosopher. Not put off or repelled by the nature of his work. Good, if low-brow sense of humor. Likes his liquor, though not a drunkard. (May double with Player King). ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
[OSRIC]
Mid-20's - mid-30's. Often described as a fop, I'd like to think of Osric as a court gadfly (Hamlet asks Horatio, dost know this waterfly?) -- someone who is hyper-aware of court behavior, court gossip, court intrigue . . . who's in, who's out -- and is doing his best to keep his head above water and stay on the right side of political machinations, which means getting as close to Claudius as possible. Respectful, willing to please, and eager to be important, to be in the center of things. It's a world filled with treachery, and Osric is doing all he can to survive and remain in the King's good graces. Knowledgeable with fencing terminology and moves, as most young men in Elsinore would be. ACTORS OF ALL ETHNICITIES STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO SUBMIT.
