LANE/MERRIMAN, 30-65. Servants in the households or Algernon and Jack, they save their employers from embarrassment and support their easy-going lifestyle.
JOHN “Jack” WORTHING (AKA ERNEST), Late 20s to early 30s. In the city he goes by the name Ernest, a fun-loving bachelor, and in the country he is Jack, land-owner and guardian to Cecily. In love with Gwendolyn and friend to Algernon.
REV. CHASUBLE, 50-65. Local vicar and source of moral judgment, though easy-going and kind.
GWENDOLEN FAIRFAX, 20s. Lady Bracknell’s daughter and the apple that falls from the tree. Believes in style over all else. Romantic and opinionated. In love with Ernest.
LADY BRACKNELL, 50-65. The stereotypical Victorian matriarch - believes in style over substance and the necessity for social and class barriers. Strongly opinionated and a true bully. Mother to Gwendolyn.
CECILY CARDEW, 18. Jack Worthing’s ward, grand-daughter of Jack’s adopted father, Sir Thomas Cardew. Romantic and imaginative, men will do anything for her.
MISS PRISM, 50-65. Cecily’s governess. Educating Cecily to have no imagination nor sensationalism in her life. An outward symbol of Victorian refinement, Miss Prism holds her own secrets.
