Physically, Judy is going through an awkward stage, her body thick and soft with the onset of puberty without any of the curvaceous benefits yet to come. But what she lacks in glamour she more than makes up for in effervescence. She has the energy of a pep squad and a never-say-die commitment to succeed, combined with a ready wit and a wicked sense of the absurd. More than anything, Judy just wants to be loved and accepted for who she is. Her vulnerability is as fragile as her self-esteem. She believes if she can just become a movie star, she can heal her broken family and quell her intense insecurities. FRANK GUMM Male Caucasian to play 30’s Bari tenor to sustained Ab. Like his daughter, Frank Gumm’s charismatic, audience-pleasing showmanship does not conceal the delicate poetry of his soul. Watching him perform, one can see the origins of the adult Judy Garland. Strong singer with movement ability. ROGER EDENS Male Caucasian to play 30 ‘s Bari Tenor to F Roger has an open, easy manner in keeping with his Texas roots and the comfort in his own skin, a quality he longs to impart to young Judy. May also play George Jessel. Strong singer. Piano ability a plus. ETHEL GUMM Female Caucasian to play 30’s Mezzo soprano with mix to D. A plain woman who compensates with a relentless, aggressive drive to succeed. Ethel’s need to be loved as a woman overshadows the tough love she practices with her children. Piano abilty a plus. Strong singer. MICKEY ROONEY (Joe Yule) Male Cacasian to play ages 14–17 Tenor. A pint-sized dynamo with an irrepressible energy and streetwise savvy. A self-absorbed opportunist and hedonist, he is an unrepentant skirt-chaser. Still, he’ll do anything for Judy—except consider her as a girlfriend. Strong singer with some dance ability. Drum playing ability a plus. KAY KOVERMAN / MA LAWLOR Female Caucasian to play Age 50’s Mezzo soprano with traditional belt to C. Kay Koverman is a matronly monument of American womanhood. Her loyal service to America’s richest man was the only logical step up from having served a Republican president. Despite her patrician, WASP behavior, her actions demonstrate a compassionate maternal side./Only in the dodgy world of child performers could the crass and morally dubious Ma Lawlor be considered an educator. Strong Singer L.B. MAYER Male Caucasian to play 50’s 60’s. Baritone. Mayer is a bespectacled owl of a man, though Napoleonic is his sense of value and mission as the head of the biggest movie studio in Hollywood and the richest man in America. He clings to respectability and class in response to his roots as a penniless, Yiddish-speaking junk man. Strong singer. ========= The Norma Terris Theatre 2016 Season (LORT D) THE ROAR OF THE GREASEPAIN - THE SMELL OF THE CROWD Director – Don Stephenson Musical Director - TBA Choreographer – Liza Gennaro Writers of the Book/Music/Lyrics - Book, Music & Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley; Adaptation by Don Stephenson 1st rehearsal date – April 19, 2016 Performance dates – May 19 – June 26, 2016 Seeking: SIR: Male 45-60, superior in attitude, a craftsman at intellectual games and loves to abuse his self-proclaimed importance. Strong actor: good with comedy and text, who has a good solid singing voice. COCKY: Male 30’s. A follower until he isn’t, a quirky leading man, still learning to be comfortable in his own skin, in love with The Kid. Excellent actor/singer/dancer THE KID: Female 30’s Works whatever angle that plays into her favor, a survivor, enjoys the social game and is happy to use her sexuality, brains and sense of humor to get herself further in favor with “the boss”. Has a romantic investment in Cocky THE STRANGER: Male, Female or Transgender actor/singer of any race. 30’s to 50’s. Is able to come into this world and turn things upside down. CINDY: 20’s gorgeous, owner of a shop. She’s a ray of sunshine, but clouds are moving in. Optimistic by nature, she inherited a dime store when her parents died, a debt-ridden dime store she has faithfully run for several years. It has run her down a bit. It was not her plan to stay in Centerville. She has a burning, now flaming, desire to get out and go where she can stretch and find her corner of the sky. MATT: 20’s, hot in a small town way, He’s been Cindy’s boyfriend and designated life partner forever. His worldview is not a wide as Cindy’s, the Friday night lights are the brightest thing in his life. AUNT CLEO: 40’s and it’s been a road of discovery and every mile she has traveled is written on her face. She became a beatnik and is transitioning into a a Hippie. One of the early flower children with a psyche that is becoming slightly skewed by that early morning pipe every morning. TANYA: African American, early 30’s street smart and sassy. She’s hot, she’s been around and is working every angle she can keep herself comfortably afloat in the big city. She has big personality, big voice, big hair. BRIAN: Mid-late 30’s a good looking executive type. Don Draper-ish, but with more warmth and humor. Nevertheless, a product of the early, mad men 60’s and he DOES work in advertising. He has a drinking problem.
