SEEKING:
The world of Mombasa and particularly the people who frequent the Jazz and Afrobeat club at the center of the show, MOTO MOTO, are a unique intersection of Kenyan identities: People of Black, South Asian and Middle Eastern descent. We welcome and are seeking vibrant, eclectic, non-musical theatre voices with styles that include: American Jazz, African Jazz, R&B, Afrobeat, Taarab, Bhangra, and Soul.
[NADIRA] – OFFER IS OUT ON THIS ROLE. female identifying; The beautiful, sultry and mysterious headlining singer at Moto Moto. She is the pulse of the club and has a voice that is powerful, unparalleled and mystifying. She has a strong and alluring energy that is hard to resist. Has dealt with hardships in her past and is persistent and positive about looking forward; Voice: ALTO WITH SOPRANO TENDENCIES.
[OMARI] – OFFER IS OUT ON THIS ROLE. male identifying; The only son of Hassan and Siti who has recently studied in American and is back to carry on the political dynasty of the Tehmu family in Mombasa. He is smart, caring, considerate and also at a crossroads in his life about following his heart and his love of music or his predetermined destiny. Voice: SILKY TENOR, STRONG FALSETTO A PLUS; Good mover, late 20s-early 30s; can be Black, South Asian or Middle Eastern descent. Has an East African/Kenyan accent; Please note if you can play the saxophone.
[AHMED] – male identifying; The sexy MC/hype man of Moto Moto. He’s a generous spirit who always tries to lead with love. He is Omari’s best friend and is also desperately and comically in love with Rashida. Voice: TENOR, STRONG BELT, STRONG RHYTHM; Strong mover, late 20s-30s. Black. Has an East African/Kenyan accent.
[CHECHE] – OFFER IS OUT ON THIS ROLE. female identifying; The spirited and determined long time fiancée of Omari; She is incredibly intelligent, savvy, beautiful and the brains behind Omari’s political campaign. Could be the next president but chose to support Omari’s legacy while being an active part of it. Voice: MEZZO SOPRANO/SOPRANO; Good mover, late 20s-early 30s; can be Black, South Asian or Middle Eastern descent. Has an East African/Kenyan accent.
[RASHIDA] – female identifying; The whip smart, funny, beautiful, curvaceous and talented head bartender at Moto Moto. She has yet to reciprocate Ahmed’s feelings for her and she doesn’t miss an opportunity to shoot him down though it's clear that she secretly likes him as well. Very outspoken, tells it like it is, but has a lot of heart when it comes to the people closest to her. Voice: ALTO; Good mover; Early to late 30s; Black; Has an East African/Kenyan accent.
[MADONGO] – male identifying; The manager of Moto Moto; his personality is not everyone’s cup of tea, but deep down, he’s a man in search of something great and someone to love. Voice: BARITONE; Good mover; 30s; Black. Has an East African/Kenyan accent.
[SITI/WATAMARAKA] – OFFER IS OUT ON THIS ROLE. female identifying; Omari’s incredibly caring mother; She is proud to have been the First Lady of Mombasa and is excited for her son to continue the legacy. She is loving, savvy, intelligent and is the brains behind any and every Tehmu family operation; Doubles as Watamaraka - the Goddess of Evil and mother of Marimba, the Goddess of Music. Voice: MEZZO SOPRANO; Decent mover; 40s+; can be Black, South Asian or Middle Eastern descent; Has an East African/Kenyan accent.
[HASSAN] – OFFER IS OUT ON THIS ROLE. male identifying; Omari’s supportive father; He is the current Mayor of Mombasa who is looking to retire and have Omari carry the torch. He is loveable, sometimes silly but always caring. He wants the best for his only son. Voice: BARITONE; Decent mover; 50s+; can be Black, South Asian or Middle Eastern descent. Has an East African/Kenyan accent.
[BALOZI] – OFFER IS OUT ON THIS ROLE. A mysterious and uniquely quirky “seer.” Their spirit and energy feel ageless and timeless. They are charming and wise; Voice: ALTO/BARITONE/BASS; Decent mover; 50s+; Black. Has an East African/Kenyan accent.
[GRIO TRIO] - OFFERS IS OUT ON THESE ROLES. In the world of the show, they move between time and space as our narrators and guides. They are all uniquely mysterious, sultry and charismatic in their own way; Doubles as part of the ensemble of the show; Strong movers; late 20s-40s; Note on the combination: Has an East African/Kenyan accent.
