[ANNETTE] Female-presenting, 30s-40s, any ethnicity. Wife of Alan Raleigh and Mom to son, Benjamin. Appears on the surface to be polite and accommodating, but we soon learn that this is all part of a façade which reveals someone much more disingenuous. Annette has a nervous stomach and is prone to become ill when tensions ensue. When her veneer is stripped away we see she is an incredibly insecure and unhappy person.
[ALAN] Male-presenting, 30s-40s, any ethnicity. Husband of Annette Raleigh and Father to son, Benjamin. Alan is a self-involved, self-important attorney who spends a good deal of his time throughout the play on his cell phone. He is oblivious to the fact that the others are annoyed with him for spending more time on his phone than with them. Alan views the meeting with the other couple as a waste of his time. His marriage to his wife, Annette is strained and he often speaks to her with condescension.
[VERONICA] Female-presenting, 30s-40s, any ethnicity. Wife of Michael Novak and Mom to son, Henry. Veronica is the one who organized the meeting between the parents and is a bit of a control freak. She is extremely fussy and fancies herself to be a “good citizen of the planet”. She prides herself on her awareness of international issues and being a person of high moral standards. Like Annette, this is all a façade, which erodes throughout the course of the evening.
[MICHAEL] Male-presenting, 30s-40s, any ethnicity. Husband of Veronica Novak and Father to son, Henry. Michael sells domestic hardware and appears to be most cheerful of the group. Ultimately, his calm and happy exterior breaks down to reveal a much darker interior. Of the four characters, Michael comes off as a more blue collar, working class character. Although he initially comes across as an even-keeled peacemaker, he ultimately reveals himself to be just as bitter, dark and miserable as the others.
