Breakdown
SEX WITH STRANGERS
ETHAN: mid 20s. An attractive, impetuously brash twenty-something blogger who literally and figuratively bursts into Olivia’s life one snowy evening. Comfortable in his skin; sexy, sexual and charmingly self-effacing just when you want to write him off as hopelessly arrogant. ETHAN has found instant notoriety and success by blogging about his exploits having sex with strangers, but harbors deeper ambitions and values than perhaps meets the eye.
OLIVIA: Late 30s – 40. A bookish but not uptight schoolteacher/writer living in rural Michigan; attractive, confidant enough, but not a voracious socializer/dater. An old-school lover of books and serious literature, not up on the latest blogging trends, OLIVIA achieved limited literary success with one novel and despite having always dreamed of writing full time is finding herself reticent to pick the pen back up in a serious way
NUREYEV'S EYES
Jamie Wyeth- A painter. Son of the famous American painter Andrew Wyeth. Born and raised in a small New England environment. Seeking an actor to play from ages 28-46.
Rudolf Nureyev - An international Russian ballet star who has defected to the West. Passionate and volatile. Seeking an actor to play from ages 36-54. Must have some ballet experience.
MY NAME IS ASHER LEV
Asher Lev – Male, 25-30
The narrator of the story. Ages from 6 to 25. An artistic prodigy whose passionate love for painting isn’t accepted by his father. Curious, sensitive, willful, and driven. Asher struggles to reconcile his love for his family and the traditions of his faith, with the demands of his art. Requires an actor of vast depth, imagination and presence.
The Men (played by one actor): 50-60 Requires an actor of vast depth, imagination, humor and ability to transform.
Aryeh Lev – Asher’s father – ages from 40-60. A respected figure in his Jewish community. Passionate, tireless devotion to his faith. He works for the Rebbe, and frequently travels to Russia to save Jews from persecution. Aryeh doesn’t understand why his son creates art and suffers greatly by Asher’s inability to follow Hasidic traditions.
Jacob Kahn – Ages from 70-80. A highly successful artist who mentors Asher. As a Jew unconstrained by religion or society, he pushes Asher to discover his own artistic voice and path in life.
The Rebbe – Wise, compassionate leader of the Ladover Hasidic Jews. He arranges for Asher to study with Jacob Khan.
Yitzchok-Asher’s uncle who encourages his art.
The Women (played by one actor): 35-45 Requires an actor of vast depth, imagination, and ability to transform.
Rivkeh Lev – Asher’s mother. Ages 30-50. Suffers deeply from the loss of her brother. A woman of extraordinary strength and frailty. Devoted, curious, loves her family. She sees and encourages Asher’s gift, but this places her in the middle of the conflict between father and son.
Anna Schaeffer – 40-45. Sophisticated, business savvy art gallery owner, who displays Asher’s art. Rachel – 30. A model that poses for Asher.
