Juliet – late 20s female. A passionate, deep-feeling, poetic and deeply disaffected person.
Romeo – late 20s male. A passionate, deep-feeling, poetic and deeply disaffected person.
Lord Capulet – 40s-50s male. A strong, intelligent, aggressive, angry, hopeful, domineering person.
Lady Capulet – 40s female. A well-meaning, worried, conflicted and caring person.
Tybalt – 20-30s male. A hot-headed, aggressive, angry person. A strong fighter.
Lord Montague – 40s-50s male. A caring, strong, perhaps slightly befuddled, person.
Lady Montague – 40s-50s female. A well-meaning, compassionate person.
Benvolio – 20s male. A smart, loyal, poetic, gloomy, loving person. With a temper.
Mercutio – 20s male. A smart, loyal, poetic, wild, loving person. With a biting wit.
Friar Lawrence – 40s-60s male. A compassionate, zealous, very well-meaning person of faith.
Nurse – 40s-50s female. A charming, scattered, kind, compassionate person.

For all actors we are looking for creative, collaborative actors, with a strong sense of who they are.

Willing to play and improvise. We are viewing characters through an expansive lens in terms of age and race/ ethnic background.

OPHELIA - 18+ to play 16, musical ability a plus, open to all ethnicities, we are looking for an expansive idea of who she could be. optimistic artistic musical young woman who grew up in this castle. Her father works for the king. Knows what is expected of her, but still driven by hope, passion, and love.

GERTRUDE - late 30s - 50s, the goddamn Queen of Denmark. Strong sense of self and point of view, maternal in the mama bear sense. “I’m every woman”. Cool and gorgeous, but as the play goes on, exposes their anxiety, burden and fear.

TATIANA - 30-50s, Ophelia’s lady's maid, grounded, musical ability a plus. nurse, guardian. Been with her for her whole life. Smart, calm, protective.

Twelfth Night

NOTE: Musical ability is a plus for all of the roles. This play will be performed with the actors’ natural accents. Roles may be doubled.

Orsino. Male, 30+. A suave debonair romantic in love with love. Able to speak verse well. High status, and exudes charisma. Able to suffer the pain of unrequited love but remain attractive to Viola.

Viola. Female, 20-28. A deeply emotional and yet stoic figure. Connects with the audience and makes them feel complicit in the action. She is attractive as both a young man and a woman. The availability of a wide vocal speaking range and movement skills an advantage.

Olivia. Female 25+. An aristocrat in mourning. This character forms the emotional arc of the play from the depths of bereavement to the giddy heights of falling in love. High status and yet remain sympathetic.

Feste. Male, 35+. A professional fool who must be able to connect with and audience with both melancholy and with searing truth. Actors with a strong singing voice are encouraged to audition. Movement and clowning skills an advantage.

Malvolio. Male, 45+. A would-be Puritan looking for self-advancement. Feins high status and is resented for it. NOTE: Actors with strong comic skills in both language and physicality are encouraged to audition.

Sir Toby Belch. Male 50+. A family member who is outstaying his welcome. A convincing drunk and yet the driving force behind the plot. Character embodies tenacity, energy, and charm. He should be gross and cheeky at the same time.

Maria. Female, 40+. The all-knowing servant with more wit than most. Fun and frank. Her devotion to Sir Toby should be from genuine love. She knows her place but is able to deal with the best of them.

Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Male, 40+. An upper-class fool but with a heart. Has status, with little intelligence. Gullible but loveable.

Sebastian. Male, 20-28. A romantic lead and the identical twin of Viola. Has a strong presence and is attractive. The ability to sword fight is an advantage.

Antonio, Male 35+. A sea Captain who is devoted and loyal to Sebastian. Both sensitive and masculine. Undercover from a shady past he risks his life for his companion. The ability to sword fight an advantage.

Fabian, Male, 35-55. One of Olivia’s servants, comic, bumbling with a slightly downtrodden style. Valentine, Male, 25-40. One of Orsino’s servants who acts as a go-between.

Captain, Male, 35-55 year old. Rough and ready.
