by Paul Portner

Directed by Bruce Jordan

Gompertz Theatre

Rehearsals begin: 5/16/23

Previews: 5/31/23 & 6/1/23

The hilarious whodunit where the audience gets to solve the crime. A mixture of improvisation and up to-the-minute spontaneous humor. The play is delightfully different every time you see it. The play is set today in a hairstyling salon in the city in which it plays. The landlady Isabel Czerny who lives above the shop is murdered, and every one of the actors has a reason to do her in. The audience gets involved in the action by questioning the actors and attempting to solve the crime.

SEEKING:

BARBARA DEMARCO – She/her. 20s-30s. The wisecracking, gum-snapping, nail-polishing hairdresser cum manicurist. She keeps Shear Madness running by answering phones, taking appointments and restocking shelves. She's well put together, though on the cheap side. She is likable, ambitious and streetwise and can spot a bad dye job from 20 paces away.

EDDIE LAWRENCE – He/him. 30s-early 50s. A “well dressed, nice-looking confidence man” who covers a dangerous interior with a smooth, suave, and occasionally charming exterior. Though he’s the mystery man of the piece, he has a great sense of comedy.

TONY WHITCOMB – ROLE IS CAST. He/him. 20s-40s. The likable, flamboyant, irrepressible proprietor of the Shear Madness salon; fun, devilish, and interested in everything and everyone, but never jaded in any way. His shoot from the hip comedy must endear him to all. Should be good at physical comedy and love playing to an audience.

MRS. SHUBERT – ROLE IS CAST. She/her. Mid 40s-early 70s. An old-money Park Avenue socialite of impeccable breeding and manner – her maiden name is very socially prominent. She can really turn on the charm when she needs to and at her finest is a real class act. “Good looker and good mover.”

MIKEY THOMAS – ROLE IS CAST. He/him. Early 20s-mid 30s. A preppy-looking, eager-beaver younger partner to Nick. He is very helpful, but at the same time innocent, naïve, and impressionable. A believable, ambitious young cop who supplies much of the credibility to the investigation.

NICK ROSETTI* – OFFER OUT. He/him. 30s-50s. A hard-working New York gumshoe detective responsible for the investigation at Shear Madness. He is a likeable, approachable, forceful cop. A personable character who is also an excellent comic straight man. Loaded with personality with a solid voice, who can learn the dynamics that will keep the play moving forward. (*Name can change to Nick Johnson or Tom O'Brien depending on actor’s background)

Texas, 1933. Alberta “Pearl” Johnson, an African American women who carries generations of songs in her memory, is serving time for murder when she meets Susannah Mullally, a white scholar collecting songs. Though suspicious of one another, the women recognize an opportunity for Alberta to find her missing daughter and Susannah to earn recognition in a male-dominated world. From a prison farm to the stages of New York, the women’s alliance and uncertain friendship will be tested by prejudice, ambition, and the true cost of success in an unjust world.

Content warning: This play centers around the topics of race, religion, death, and injustice. We do encourage actors to read the play before choosing to audition.

SEEKING:

ALBERTA ‘PEARL’ JOHNSON – ROLE IS CAST, seeking submissions for future replacements only. African American. She/her. 40s and older. Sings and moves well. She is a survivor. A woman of great power and dignity who is not afraid to speak the truth.

SUSANNAH MULLALLY – ROLE IS CAST, seeking submissions for future replacements only. White, she/her. Early 30s to 40-ish. Susannah is an ambitious “song collector” working for the Library of Congress. She is strong and earthy, educated and articulate. The character does sing some folk songs in the show but does not need to be a great singer.

One hotel suite, four tenors, two wives, three girlfriends, and a soccer stadium filled with screaming fans. What could possibly go wrong? It’s 1930s Paris and the stage is set for the concert of the century – as long as producer Henry Saunders can keep Italian superstar Tito Merelli and his hot blooded wife, Maria, from causing runaway chaos. Prepare for an uproarious ride, full of mistaken identities, bedroom hijinks, and madcap delight.

SEEKING:

HENRY SAUNDERS – He/him. early 50s. American - any ethnicity. Born in Akron, Ohio. An opera producer and businessman; often exasperated. Producing a concert of this magnitude is his life-long dream and he sees it slipping away from him. Father-in-law to and former boss of Max.

MARIA MERELLI – She/her. 50s. Italian. Tito’s powerful and stunning wife who dresses with style, as if straight out of an Italian fashion magazine. Maria loves her family and will do whatever it takes to keep them together. Strong Italian accent.

TITO MERELLI/BEPPO – He/him. 50s. Italian with a large physical presence. Tito is “the most famous opera singer in the world” – and often late, usually “because of his drinking and womanizing.” He’s currently having a crisis: he’s getting old. Doubles as Beppo, a bellhop with hidden talent and a moustache. Beppo is a self-proclaimed man of honor. Both Tito and Beppo have strong Italian accents and great singing voices. A strong, operatic Tenor.

MIMI MERELLI – She/her. 25 years old. Italian American. Daughter of Tito and Maria and aspiring actress. Mimi is in a romantic relationship with Carlo. Born and brought up in America – has an American accent. Wears “very little” at the top of the play- “just underwear and barely that.”

CARLO NUCCI – He/him. 20s. Italian with an American accent and a body “like a Greek God”. Carlo is a young hot shot Opera singer, an up-and-coming tenor with star quality. Idolizes Tito, and in love with Mimi. A strong, operatic Tenor. Wears “very little” at the top of the play- “just underwear and barely that.”

TATIANA RACÓN – She/her. 40s. The great Racón is Russian opera singer, the famous soprano. She is “ravishingly beautiful.” A former lover of Tito’s with a heavy Russian accent. Sings well – an operatic soprano.
