BREAKDOWN
ALISON – Female, Caucasian, 43 years old, a cartoonist. Lesbian. Wry, pragmatic, smarty pants. Alison is stuck artistically, and goes in search of the pieces of the story of her father’s demise in an effort to heal herself.
MEDIUM ALISON – Female, Caucasian, 19 years old, a college freshman. Shy, bookish (our future Lesbian cartoonist), not comfortable in her own skin or sexuality yet.
BRUCE BECHDEL – Male, Caucasian, Alison’s father, 43ish. Handsome, closeted gay man. High school English teacher, historic home renovator by night. An artist at heart that never made it out of the small town. Charming on the surface, with deep layers of shame/anger at the ready when pricked.
HELEN BECHDEL – Female, Caucasian, Alison’s mother, 43ish. Attractive, composed, with a quiet coiled intensity. Everything looks perfect on the surface: well put together. She aspired to be an actress in NY, but chucked it to have a family in small town, Pennsylvania. Kind, but with low-grade hostility available.
ROY/MARK/PETE – Male, any ethnicity, 17-28. Handsome, versatile, all-American. Can be both innocent and sexy.
JOAN – Female, any ethnicity, a college student. Joan is 19 going on 30. She is confident, grounded and warm. A political lesbian.
