One of the greatest American plays of the 20th century, The Glass Menagerie explores the visceral bonds of family. Southern matriarch Amanda frets constantly over her two live-in adult children—the painfully shy Laura and Laura’s restless poet brother, Tom. With great cajoling, Tom brings home a possible suitor for Laura, but reality soon casts a shadow on Amanda’s dreams for both her children. This iconic, emotional and enduring family drama made Williams famous and has become a classic of the American repertoire.
Seeking the following role only:
AMANDA WINGFIELD
(late 40s-early 60s) A rare combination of fragility and strength, she was raised in the South with an appreciation for the finer things in life. She made a bad choice in marriage and struggled in adulthood because of it. Although disappointed by life, she has made the best of it and pours all of her love into her children. As a mother, she is smothering and imposes her will on her children, but she is also able to charm her children and the few guests she has in her home. She is morally rigid and not intellectually curious. She understands the world through her eyes, but can’t embrace any other perspective. Seeking an actress who can embrace contradictions, who is simultaneously as strong as an ox and as fragile as one of Laura’s pieces of glass – a woman whose strength is draining from her quickly.
