MIDNIGHT AT THE NEVER GET - West Coast Premiere
Book, Lyrics and Music by Mark Sonnenblick
Conceived by Sam Bolen, Max Friedman and Mark Sonnenblick
Directed by Stephen Brotebeck
Rehearsals: September 24 - October 20, 2024
Performances: October 24 - November 17, 2024
Opening Night: November 2, 2024
SYNOPSIS: It’s 1965 in Greenwich Village. In an illegal backroom cabaret called The Never Get, lovers Trevor and Arthur perform an act that unabashedly celebrates gay romance for like-minded audiences. As they croon their way toward the end of a revolutionary decade, facing the conflicting promises of professional success and personal liberation—will their relationship survive? Featuring a lush and seductive score inspired by the Great American Songbook, Midnight at the Never Get is a dreamy musical meditation on memory, personal and political courage, and the enduring power of love.
TREVOR: A dapper and talented cabaret singer. Controlled, precise, charismatic. Has the audience in the palm of his hand. Baritenor, not pop. Early to Mid 30s, male identifying. Bb2 - B4 with strong falsetto in that higher range.
THE PIANIST: Trevor’s accompanist and stand-in for Arthur. Jazz piano player. He sings but, because Arthur’s a writer, he doesn’t have to be great at it. Early to Mid 30s, male identifying.
OLDER TREVOR: Trevor as the person he actually was at the age he died (though not necessarily who he was on his deathbed). If his voice isn’t as strong as Trevor’s, if he isn’t quite as sharp a performer, he is still captivating in his own way. Early 40s to Mid 50s, male identifying.
By Harrison David Rivers
Directed by Kian Kline-Chilton
Rehearsals: January 7 - February 21, 2025
Performances: February 13 - March 9, 2025
Opening Night: February 22, 2025
SYNOPSIS: The son. The mother. The husband. Can they ever really know each other—or will there always be a chasm between them? When a crisis forces a gay Black man, his white lover, and his estranged mother to come together in face of the devout patriarch and insidious ideology that threatens to tear them apart, will the delicate foundations of their relationships begin to show cracks?
Or will their personal bonds strengthen in the face of adversity? This uncompromising, intelligent, and lyrical play is a frank and profound exploration of family, self-discovery, and acceptance.
SON: Sharp and quick-witted, with a dark sense of humor. He plays his cards close to his chest. He sometimes forgets to breathe. Black, Early 30s to Mid 40s, male identifying.
MOTHER: Smart and perceptive. Warm, but not a pushover. She has a gravity, and simultaneously, a weightlessness. She is fiercely committed to her son. Black, Early 50s to Mid 60s, female identifying.
HUSBAND: Charming and slightly goofy. Deeply empathetic, but not soft. An advocate, always. White. Early 30s to Mid 40s, male identifying.

SYNOPSIS: While a mysterious blackout leaves a navy stranded near enemy territory, the libidinous Lieutenant Shane Horne puts her very specific talents to use, including with the general’s wife. Meanwhile, a famed Angel sends the Navy’s psychiatrist on an epic quest to save humanity. A subversive, sapphic sex farce of classically epic proportions, Merry Me is a madcap and mischievous mashup of ancient mythology and restoration comedy—and an ode to female pleasure.
LT. SHANE HORNE: A lieutenant in the Navy. A sexual empath, God's gift to lady parts of all shapes, colors and vintages. Despite her talents, she is unable to find pleasure herself. Late 20s to late 30s, female identifying.
DR. JESS O’NOPE: A wise but repressed Navy psychiatrist who hates her job. Might be past her prime but wants to finally say yes to Life. She becomes an unwilling prophet with an epic quest to save humanity. Mid 30s to early 40s, female identifying.
MRS. SAPH MEMNON: An unwilling wife, married to Willy for status and money. Now trapped on an island with her husband and in-laws, she craves independence and pleasure. 30s, female identifying.
PVT. WILLIE MEMNON: Married to Sapph. Sweet, kind, masculinely woke, but with a jealous streak. Has lived a privileged yet unremarkable life. Anxious to prove himself to his father, The General. Mid 30s to early 40s, male identifying.
GEN. MEMNON: A hot-headed, war-starved General in the Navy. A blustery blowhard who’s a child on the inside. Late 40s to Mid 60s, male identifying.
GENERAL’S WIFE: A sex-starved wife. Dislikes her husband, The General. Late 40s to Mid 60s, female identifying.
THE ANGEL: from Tony Kushner's Angels in America. 20s-60s.
