BREAKDOWN

HANNAH (Female, early 40s) Any ethnicity. The Rodman’s cook and a strongly independent presence in the household. She is good humored and somewhat mischievous. She holds more fondness for the town and the strikers than her employers. She particularly enjoys “messing with” Cora.

LUCY (Female, 20s) The Rodman’s maid. Youthful and treads lightly in the Rodman household.

CORA RODMAN (Female, late 30s-early 40s) Andrew’s sister. Nervous, high-strung. Comedic with depth. She looks out for her own interest above all. Disapproves of her brother and highly disapproves of his wife. She is described as “thin and brittle.”

HENRY ELLICOTT (Male, late 30s) He is good looking; very much a leading man. He is a lawyer; pragmatic and sophisticated, intelligent, particularly in the financial realm. He looks out for his own interests. He and Andrew are best friends; however, he finds Andrew to be weak.

ANDREW RODMAN (Male, early-mid 40s) The boss of the local brush making factory. Idealistic. He lives in an “ivory tower”. He loves his town and the people in it. The strike and his dwindling financial situation that caused it, have tired him. He sees the best in people and the world, to the point of naiveté, and never wants to cause any harm or discomfort to anyone.

JULIE RODMAN (Female, early 30s) Andrew’s wife. Attractive, slim. Spirited, positive, kind, but careless (think Barbara Stanwyck, Jean Arthur, Claudette Colbert). She has trouble seeing the bigger picture even though she wants to. Wants to change the world. She feels trapped by her lot in life.

THOMAS FIRTH (Male, late 30s-early 40s) Any ethnicity. A soul filled, soulful, peaceful man, but still willing to do what needs to be done. A man who works at the brush factory, currently on strike. A friend of Andrew’s, even though the strike tears them apart.

LEO WHALEN (Male, late 30s) OPEN ETHNICITY. Calm and in control. He’s experienced, eloquent and persuasive. A strike organizer from out of town.

SAMUEL WILKIE (Male, 30s-40s) The head strike-breaker. A businessman prone to violence. Cold. Deals in matters of bloodshed like a normal business deal. Physically husky.

MOSSIE DOWEL (Male, early 30s) One of Wilkie’s goons. A Thug. The Muscle behind Wilkie. A physically big man. Always cracking his knuckles.

JOE EASTER (Male, early 30s) One of Wilkie’s goons. Thin and nervous. (A knife thrower – though not essential for actor to do).
