CROWNS

by Regina Taylor

Adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry

Directed by Donya K Washington

Rehearsals begin Aug 7th

Lesher Theatre, Sep 9-Oct 6, 2023

When Chicago-born Yolanda is sent down South after the death of her brother, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her and the powerful rituals connected to their dazzling hats. This jubilant musical traces the roots of Gospel through contemporary hip-hop, fusing rich storytelling in a stirring coming-of-age tale.

SEEKING:

[Mother Shaw] 50s-60s: A Nurturer. Present. Yolanda's no-nonsense Grandmother. Rooted. A strong woman who has worked hard all of her life. Mother Shaw is steadfast in her beliefs and does not suffer fools. She has a hard-earned and sizeable hat collection. Strong gospel voice.

[Velma] 30s-40s: Great sense of humor. Resilient, sassy, and fabulous. Marches to her own beat. A licensed funeral director and a firm believer in hattitude, the attitude one must possess to wear a hat well. Strong Bluesy/Jazz vocalist.

[Yolanda] Late teens-Early 20s: Brooklyn girl with an edge. Has an attitude and sensitive side. At a crossroads in her life and mourning her brother's death, she has been sent from her home in Brooklyn to South Carolina to live with her Grandmother. Not afraid to go against the grain, she speaks up for what she believes is right, though she still has much about life to learn. Strong vocally. Some rap and moves very well.

[Mabel] 30s - 50s: Fiery percussive presence. Always front and center and will speak the truth. A force to be reckoned with. A preacher's wife and lover of hats. She believes that praising the Lord is the most important thing on earth and passionate about dressing modestly for Him. Vocally versatile and moves well.

[Jeanette] Early 20s - late 30s: Centered. She understands the flirtatious powers of a good hat and its value. A solid singer/dancer/mover.

[Wanda] 30s-50s: Usually tries to play by the rules. A judge/teacher. She admired her Grandmother's hats as a child and hopes to one day pass down the Hat Queen tradition and the family history that goes with it. She sees Sunday service as not only a time of faith but also of fashion—a place to worship and show off her style. Sings and moves well.

[Preacher] 30s-50s: Grounded and confident presence and stature. Extremely versatile character. In the show he represents all of the men in the women's lives: husband, preacher, father. Strong vocally and moves well.

THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE

by Matthew López

Directed by Elizabeth Carter

Rehearsals start Oct 2, 2023

Lesher Theatre, Nov 4-26, 2023

Casey is an Elvis impersonator with everything going for him, including a flashy sequin jumpsuit. But just like that, he loses his gig, rent is overdue, and his wife announces a baby on the way. So when Elvis leaves the building and a drag show moves in, “The King” transforms into an all-out queen with the help of some new friends who become the second family Casey never saw coming. With snappy zingers and dance-worthy numbers, this wildly entertaining story will challenge your assumptions with extraordinary humor and depth.

SEEKING:

CASEY, 20s, white. He has star power and incredible magnetism. He’s unendingly charming – but he hasn’t yet figured out how to put all of his great skills to good work. He loves his wife completely, and loves being in front of an audience. He is an incredible mover and singer, and has an adventurous, playful spirit. He’s incredibly comfortable in his body, and at varying levels of undress on stage. Casey is a singer-songwriter who makes less than a living being an Elvis Impersonator at a dive bar called Cleo's. A dynamic and entertaining performer, a heterosexual man who would never think about stepping outside of the box of societal norms. He is loving and has a huge heart, but he could use some help in the department of being an adult. Guitar/songwriting chops very helpful. Casey appears in drag and shirtless. All body types will be considered for this role. Encourage performers of color to audition.

JO, 20s, Black. She is from Tennessee living out of a trailer with her boyfriend Casey in Florida. OH, She just found out she's pregnant, and Casey just lost his job. Jo may rock a natural on Monday, a full lace on Tuesday, box braids on Wednesday, and if she feels like it, she might give you an Eryka Babu headwrap Thursday through Sunday. She's a leader, and society expects a particular type of unfair toughness from her. She yearns to step outside of that box.

MISS TRACY MILLS, 30s-50s, gay or queer man, any race/ethnicity/cultural background. Tracy is a Drag Performer at the top of her game with the charm of a Southern Belle and the performance ability of an ICON. Tracy is the type of person who can get you together instantly with a smile. Tracy is living her truth and cannot be defined by societal norms. Hilarious, magnetic, sage and pragmatically positive. She’s made her life in the Drag world and, although she and Rexy are down on their luck we meet them. She is a wonderfully talented performer. Her aesthetic is classic, show girl, and irreverent. She’s the type of queen that everyone wants to be around.

REXY/JASON, 20s-30s, any race/ethnicity/cultural background. REXY is the young alcoholic hot mess of a queen that Miss Tracy Mills brings along to perform at Cleo's. Rexy is incredibly inventive and forward-thinking, with a personality to match. She knows her history and lives in her truth. Rexy is hard scrabble and doesn’t mince words. She is the definition of fierce. Despite her hard exterior, she continues to seek stability and an artistic home. Her aesthetic is clearly inspired by the Ball Scene. Can walk on heels and roller skate!

JASON, is the boyfriend of the landlord of the trailer park where Casey and Jo live. He is also good friends with Casey. He is your typical heterosexual bro, who surprisingly isn't afraid of stepping outside the box and trying new things. He is down to earth and wants the best for Casey and Jo. Despite first impressions, he’s also deeply thoughtful.

EDDIE, 50s-60s, any race, ethnicity, or cultural background. The no-frills owner of Cleo’s Bar on the beach in Panama City, Florida, and Bobby’s (aka/Miss Tracy) older cousin. He is easily flustered, rough around the edges, a walking ulcer, but a huge heart. His curmudgeon exterior shields his open hearted generosity and empathy. He starts off as the world’s worst emcee but transforms into an amateur showman who secretly loves the spotlight. Overworked and underpaid, Eddie has no idea/interest in how drag works, but he is all for the money it could bring in. He is a businessman who will do whatever it takes to save his business.

Rehearsals start Feb 12, 2024

Lesher Theatre, March 16-April 7, 2024

When an American basketball team travels to Beijing for an exhibition game in 1989, the drama goes deeper than the strain between countries. For two men with a past and one teen with a future, the game is a chance to claim personal victories on and off the court. Tensions rise right up to the final buzzer as a pivotal moment in history collides with the action in the arena. Driven by rapid-fire dialogue, this perceptive new play explores the cultural and political risks of raising your voice and standing your ground.

SEEKING:

MANFORD (POINT GUARD) 17, Chinese-American. He is Intense, scrappy, runs into trouble, attacks the rim with a ruthless crossover. Not tall. More Allen Iverson than Jeremy Lin.

CONNIE (SHOOTING GUARD) 20-29, Chinese-American. She is Manford’s cousin and UC Berkeley grad student. Level headed, and big picture thinker. A Chris Paul/Klay Thompson type.

WEN CHANG (SMALL FORWARD) 35-49, Chinese. He is the coach of Beijing University’s men’s basketball team. Observant, and efficient; favors three pointers over aggressive inside shots. Tim Duncan would appreciate his energy. (His English is formal, but relatively unaccented.)

SAUL (POWER FORWARD) 45-59, Jewish. He is the coach of the University of San Francisco’s Men’s basketball team. A sh*t-talking, shot blocking, washed up Larry Bird.
