Equity actors for roles in Curious Theatre Co. 2023-24 Season (see breakdown).

Curious Theatre Company is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and seeking actors of all ages, races, ethnicities, body types, gender identities and physical abilities. In reference to the character descriptions below—most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide. Curious Theatre Company commits to a thoughtful and welcoming casting process.

PREPARATION

Please prepare 2 short, contrasting monologues, not to exceed 3 minutes total. If you are unable to attend the audition on April 22 in person, you may submit a video audition to auditions@curioustheatre.org

An Equity Monitor will not be provided. The producer will run all aspects of audition.

Equity encourages everyone participating in the auditions to wear a two-ply cloth face mask, surgical mask, singer’s mask or respirator (N95, KN95 or KF94). Equity encourages members to prepare for their audition prior to arriving at the audition venue, to the extent that they can (e.g., get dressed, hair/make-up, etc.) to avoid crowding in bathrooms and dressing rooms.

The audition room can accommodate no more than 179 individuals at a time.

Mr. Peel: Clean cut, idealistic, fair-minded, naïve. A dentist. Younger than the others.

Mayor Superba: Charming, stalwart, congenial. Enjoys the power of his office.

Ms. Johnson: An efficient city clerk with good sense and a suggestion of ethics. Younger than the others.

Mr. Blake: Knows how to protect himself & fit in.

Mr. Breeding: A lack of breeding. Second in charge. Knows how to bully.

Mr. Hanratty: A do-gooder whose ideals only extend as far as his family.

Mr. Assalone: Has his hands in many pockets. A player.

Ms. Innes: A flinty, bloviating grande dame. Older than the others.

Ms. Matz: Not all there. Lives in her head.

Mr. Oldfield: His disagreeability is equaled by his confusion. Older than the others.

Marion: 24. African American woman worn from caretaking. She is responsible, pragmatic & status quo. A third-generation engine assembly line worker at general motors. A widow. Plum & Reesee’s mama.

Ressee: 17. A queer, brass African American young woman devotee of yemoja. Deeply curious about the spiritual nature of healing. A dancer & aspiring doula.

Big Ma. 60’s. Slight build with an elegant presence. A stern but deeply loving African American woman. The widowed matriarch of the Cooper Family – but only in title. A Mississippi migrant with the south in her mouth; she often talks in pictures.

Ainee: 37. A 34 weeks pregnant African American woman. Addiction survivor. Frank, humorous & slick mothed; a straight shooter. Fiercely maternal. The family historian & rebel interested in building political power. Marion’s older sister.
