Preparation
Please prepare 1 contemporary monologue, dramatic with comedic elements. (Characters GAYA, BABY & MEDING, please be prepared to demonstrate ability to speak Tagalog, and/or English inflected with a Filipino accent.)

Breakdown
Aurora, Remedios, and Eugenia are three of the most sought-after professional funeral criers in Monterey Park. They are eager to welcome Aurora’s 14-year-old daughter Ligaya from the Philippines into their world & teach her their trade. However, they soon realize that Gaya has the opposite effect on people, making them laugh instead of cry. A hilarious and heartwarming story of cultural identity, generational conflict, and finding home in a new country.
Rehearsals begin January 11, 2016.

LIGAYA BIGLANGAWA (GAYA): Asian Female, 18+ to play Filipina, 14,
A teenager who recently emigrated from Ermita, Quezon City in the Philippines. Must speak FLUENT TAGALOG and English with a Filipino inflection.
AURORA BIGLANGAWA (BABY): Asian Female to play Filipina, 30’s
Mother of Ligaya who works as a CNA (Certified Nurses Assistant) in the daytime and as a Crier in funerals on the side. Must speak FLUENT TAGALOG and English with a Filipino inflection.
REMEDIOS LO BAN LEUNG (Meding): Asian Female to play Filipina, 50’s.
CEO of Criers for Hire Inc., a business catering to professional mourners in funerals. Must speak FLUENT TAGALOG and English with a Filipino inflection.
EUGENIA NALILIGAW (HENNY): Asian Female to play American Born Filipina, Female, 20’s. Fil-Am with a degree in history from Cal-State Long Beach. Does not speak with accent.
NARCISO TRISTE : ): 18+ to play Latino, Male, 15. Colombian-American New Waver who goes to Belmont High with Ligaya. No inflection but Must be able to speak minimal Spanish.
