When a struggling guitarist returns to his small Georgia town, a blues star, rumors begin swirling that he may have made a deal with the devil to attain his musical genius. Before long, however, it becomes clear he's not the only one with a secret.

COVENANT builds on relationships between black people, secular music, and the church. A mythic and suspenseful new play that delivers one devilish twist after another and explores the power of belief and the thin line between rumor and truth.

SEEKING:

RUTHIE: (Black woman, 19) Although she thinks she is grown and goes a bit against the grain, Ruthie is the naïve and innocent one out of the group. Ruthie is obsessed with love or the idea of it. Has a facility with heightened language.

VIOLET: (Black woman, 19) Ruthie’s best friend, the black sheep of the family, loves her older sister Avery fiercely. Like her mother, Violet has a great sense of humor and is street-smart and quick. Has a facility with heightened language.

AVERY: (Black woman, 24) Dreams of seeing the world outside of this town, a woman coming into her own and terrified. Grounded and strong-willed like her mother. This role is highly physical, so those with experience in movement, clowning and contorting are encouraged to submit. Has a facility with heightened language. A confident singer.

MAMA: (Black woman, Early 40s-Early 60s) Violet and Avery’s mother, full of regret; the only thing holding her world together is her love for Avery and her belief in God. Has a great sense of humor but can shift quickly into terrifying anger. Has a facility with heightened language.

JOHNNY “HONEYCOMB” JAMES: (Black man, 24) Johnny was once an awkward late bloomer but grew up to be a local celebrity and ladies man. Johnny has been in love with Avery since he was 12 years old. A strong singer and guitarist with a facility with heightened language.
