Breakdown
Prepare a brief song in the style of the show. Contemporary in feel, but not rock. Looking for honest experience of the story and emotions portrayed in the song whether serious or humorous. You may sing from the score or other Maltby-Shire music. Have a second song prepared if asked for. Bring picture and resume, and have sheet music in the correct key. Jerry Sternbach (the music director) will be accompanying.
About the show: This is a contemporary musical revue featuring the brilliant and wide-ranging songs of Richard Maltby and David Shire. This will be the SoCal premiere of the newly revised version with added songs. Stories about relationships, making choices and choices made. Opportunities taken or missed. Doors in our lives that open and close and how we come to terms with both. Love, sex, dating, marriage, families and beyond. Modern urban adults in the middle of life's journey.
IMPORTANT – PLEASE NOTE:
Since this score is completely sung, all four singers must be
trained theatre singer-actors, because stamina is of the essence.
SEEKING:
Man 1 – All ethnicities, 30-45 yrs old – Vocal range: Hi-baritone (must have a solid easy A) Youthful and handsome. Laments of a lover who doesn't love him back, the struggle of getting fit and healthy, the commitment of marriage, living life without a love, the importance of friendship, second chances, and growing up.
Man 2 – All ethnicities, 40-55 yrs old – Vocal range: Baritone. A man approaching middle age and leaving youth behind. Reflects on the dynamic of friends and lovers, the struggle of getting through the day-to-day life of being a family man, becoming fit and healthy, moving forward and not looking back, balancing career and family, and what it means to be a father.
Woman 1 – All ethnicities, 40-50 yrs old – Vocal range: Mezzo (must have easier mix with upper register) A bit ordinary in looks, and intelligent with a modern flair. Expresses views on friendships with ex-boyfriends, the duality of public and private selves, remaining friends forever, balancing career and family, the surprises of middle-aged life, and becoming content with isolation.
Woman 2 – All ethnicities, 30-45 yrs old – Vocal range: Mezzo (must have more chest and richer lows, will need to sing in a jazzier feel) An energetic firecracker, with comedic ability and touching sincerity. She tells of a lover who doesn't love her back, her belief on life-long relationships, giving love a second chance, the revitalization given to her by a new lover.
