SYNOPSIS: In Bob and Jean, two friends from college find unexpected love when they reunite in 1941 New York City. As Bob heads off to war and Jean tours as a USO actor, their love is tested across thousands of miles. Written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning playwright and Austin native Robert Schenkkan (All the Way, The Great Society), this true story follows the tale of his own parents’ love for one another – a story about overcoming distance – capturing the complexities of the human heart amidst wartime challenges.
JEAN – Female identifying, 20s-early 30s. A small town girl with big aspirations to be a Broadway actress. Opinionated, passionate, and pragmatic, Jean performs in the USO during the war. Jean is charismatic and thoughtful in her correspondences with Bob, but desperately needs assurances from him. Must have a strong ability to bring epistolary and poetic text to life.
BOB – Male identifying, 20s-early 30s. A Brooklyn born Jewish boy who graduated high school at 16 and supported himself any way he could. Upon meeting, Jean accuses Bob of being cynical, almost bitter. But as they fall for one another, and once Bob is shipped off, he shows that he is loyal, optimistic, and inspired by the idyllic life they could have together. Must have a strong ability to bring epistolary and poetic text to life.
