Breakdown
9 cast members play multiple roles. Multicultural casting unless otherwise specified. All are encouraged to apply.
Bad Apples is a new rock musical that follows three characters inspired by the three National Guard soldiers behind the atrocities at Abu Ghraib prison in 2003/2004. Jim Leonard has created a compelling, jarring, beautiful and heartbreaking story that asks how this tragedy came to be. Who were the victims? Who were the villains? Is sadism part of being human? Was Abu really an aberration brought on by a few “bad apples?”
Principal characters:
Pvt. Lindsay Skinner, F, 18-30, Caucasian. Recent National Guard recruit, likeable working class Tennessee gal with self-esteem issues; comes on tough but naïve and vulnerable underneath
Lt. Margaret Scott, F, 30-40, smart, strong, sexy, a former teacher now career military
Mama, F, 40-60 Lindsay’s mother. Caucasian. Working class Tennessee, tough, pragmatic, direct, dry deadpan humor.
Sgt. Chuck Shepard, M, late 20s-40, African-American, charismatic, masculine, manipulative – a rock star in Army fatigues.
PFC Curt “Cunny” Lingus, M, 20s, a nice Southern Christian boy, naïve, conflicted, terrified to find himself in an actual war zone. Guitar skills a plus.
Abdulaziz Al-Omari, M, 20s/early 30s, Middle Eastern, one of the 9/11 terrorists. Committed, passionate, volatile.
Mohamed Atta, M, 40ish, Middle Eastern, one of the 9/11 terrorists. Experienced, level-headed, sense of humor
Burris, M, 45 -60, Caucasian. Lindsay’s stepfather (formerly her uncle) and Mama’s husband. Working class Tennessee, beer ‘n’ baseball guy, brusque but loving, deeply suspicious of the government and the military.
Female, 20s-30s, multiple roles/ensemble
