BREAKDOWN
BABETTE:
Female-identifying, 40-60, Black. Speaks some French as well as French-accented English in the play. An outsider, who speaks little, but is a close observer and keeps secrets of her past. She is a French refugee who is taken in by Martine and Phillipa. She has incredible presence and ends up stealing the hearts of everyone in the small town. Actress should move well.
PLAYER 1:
Male-identifying, 60-70, any ethnicity but strongly seeking actors of color for this role. Will play various roles including the Dean, who is the kind, dedicated father of Phillipa and Martine as well as a pastor, and Skipper Halvorsen as well as narration. This person should move well, have good comedic timing, and be comfortable in a collaborative setting. Will be an integral member of the company.
PLAYER 2:
Female-identifying, 30-45, any ethnicity but strongly seeking actors of color for this role. Will play various male and female roles including a pushy, wiley Swedish Lady of the Court, a fishmonger, and Lars, a young suitor in love with Phillipa as well as narration. This person should move well, have comedic timing, and be comfortable in a collaborative setting. Will be an integral member of the company.
PLAYER 4:
Male-identifying, 50-60, any ethnicity but strongly seeking actors of color for this role. Will play various roles including the loquacious lieutenant Lorens Loewnheilm, who is rendered helpless when he is around Martine and holds a candle for her his entire life as well. He grows up to be a regal, dignified worldly General. Will also play narration. This person should move well, have comedic timing, and be comfortable in a collaborative setting. Will be an integral member of the company.
PLAYER 6:
Female-identifying, 40-55, any ethnicity but strongly seeking actors of color for this role. Will play various male and female roles including Aunt Lowenheilm (in her 90s) who is used to a finer way of life than most of the other townsfolk and expects to be treated as such, and Skipper Halvorsen who is deep into a 45-year old grudge with a fellow townsperson, a local Bread Seller who is charmed by Babette, as well as Narration. This person should move well, have comedic timing, and be comfortable in a collaborative setting. Will be an integral member of the company.
