A Tale of Two Cities relies on self-conscious theatrical doubling––there is a conspicuous gap between actor and character. Each actor's set of roles inhabit positions of power and positions of powerlessness. The ingénue also plays the evil marquis. The committed revolutionary also plays the king. This allows for freedom of casting. The performers do not need to share the gender identity, sex, age, race, ethnicity, or physical ability of the characters they play. The cast of any production of this play should reflect the place in which it is produced. And in doing so, the play can ask the question of what it means to occupy any role in a world that badly needs to change.

MARCELLE SALOMON BENHAMOU – A doctor in her 50s. Mother to Daniel and Elodie; wife to Charles. Very French. Jewish. She recently achieved the status she’s worked her whole career for. Direct, with a forceful personality. A realist. Cares deeply for her children. She runs the show and does not suffer fools.
CHARLES BENHAMOU – An Algerian Jew and a doctor in his 50s. Marcelle’s husband and father to Daniel and Elodie. Has lived in France since his family fled Algeria when he was 6. Even-keeled, kind, and urbane. Thoughtful and solid. A man who knows from experience how bad things can get, and while he doesn’t live in fear, he lives with that awareness. Longs for a sense of safety.
DANIEL BENHAMOU – French-Algerian. Marcelle and Charles’ 26-year-old son. Elodie’s younger brother. A newly orthodox Jew who takes pride in his religious identity. A teacher at a Jewish school. A bit of an introvert who feels things strongly. Easy to like.
ELODIE BENHAMOU – French-Algerian. 28-year-old daughter of Marcelle and Charles. Daniel’s older sister. Opinionated, outspoken, sarcastic, and unafraid of conflict. Very smart and very funny. She has a very strong point of view. Quite depressed. Lives with her parents.
PATRICK SALOMON – 50’s, Marcelle's brother and uncle to Daniel and Elodie. Our narrator. An entirely secular Jew with a dark sense of humor. Considers himself to be too intelligent to practice religion. Wry, ironic, and charming. As outspoken as his sister and is quite certain of his views. Blunt and sarcastic.
MOLLY – 20, the Salomon’s distant American cousin. In France to study abroad; she hopes to connect to a family history that is unavailable to her in America. Wants to use her family history to ground herself. Gravitates toward family to ease her feeling of being an outsider. A bright and opinionated young woman who is optimistic and game. Far from ignorant, but her experience of the world is not yet broad.
(Older) PIERRE SALOMON – 80’s, Marcelle and Patrick’s father. The last of many generations to run the family’s piano store. A Holocaust survivor. The pain of his memories is kept in check by unflagging pragmatism, his belief in the primacy of family, and the familiarity of the piano store. His mind remains as sharp as ever.
(Young) PIERRE SALOMON – 15; back in France with his father, Lucien, after surviving in a concentration camp. Very aware of the state of the world around him. An introvert. He longs for peace and normalcy.
ADOLPHE SALOMON – 70s, Pierre’s grandfather; Lucien’s father and Marcelle and Patrick’s great grandfather. A quiet man, prone to inferiority. Perceptive and kind, and skilled at navigating and soothing family members’ distress. Is scared for his children and wishes for their family to be together once again.
IRMA SALOMON – 70s, Pierre’s grandmother; Lucien’s mother and Marcelle and Patrick’s great grandmother. Unsentimental and very French. Not religious. A Jewish mother who survived in her apartment with her husband, not knowing the fate of any of their children. Resilient and caring.
LUCIEN SALOMON – 40s, Irma and Adolphe’s son. Pierre’s father. A Holocaust survivor. Shattered and shell shocked. Dazed to be back in the world, but he persists for his son’s sake. His son is his tether to life, a future, and the belief that good still exists. Stillness on the surface; tumult underneath. Longs for peace.

Does not tolerate opinions that contradict his own. A kind of Hamlet's father.

LARRY – 21-23, Black and Queer. OPAL's brother. Attracted to JUICY, but he hides his feelings towards men. A Marine. Trying to heal from PTSD. Awkward and anxious. Feels that his identity doesn't align with how others see him. Lonely and confused; longs for JUICY to save him from his doubt in himself. A kind of Laertes.
RABBY – 40-45, Black. Mother to LARRY and OPAL. TEDRA's friend. Semi-churchy but honestly she just wanna drink and praise the Lord. She disapproves of JUICY's identity and has specific aspirations for her children. A kind of Polonius.
