BREAKDOWN
American Soup: A play with music in which Joe, an enigmatic stranger, calls on Andy Warhol at his purgatorial studio, seeking to have his portrait painted. It soon becomes apparent that Joe knows a great deal about his artist and comes bearing a gift that Andy is not readily willing to accept. Andy struggles to paint a portrait of his own life. In the process, he provides a context and commentary on the life and times of the Marcello family in Queens, NY. The family embodies the deep but anonymous quality of life in a working class neighborhood in contrast to Mr. Warhol’s quest for fame.
A live, onstage, and often interactive band performs celebrated songs reflecting the tenor of the country from the 60s to the new Millennium. We watch as the family lives through the highs and lows of the American experience. The Marcello’s and Andy’s stories are woven together to present the impact of popular culture and the landmarks of history on the evolution of the American spirit.
