EVAN — Male, 40s, African-American.

CYNTHIA — Female, 40s-50s, African-American.

CHRIS — Male, 20s, African-American.

TRACEY — Female, 40s-50s, white American of German descent.

STAN — Male, 50s, white-American of German descent, sustained a leg injury in the factory and walks with a limp.

JESSIE — Female, 40s, Italian-American.

OSCAR — Male, late 20s-30s, Colombian-American.

SEEKING racially diverse actors who identify as women, and/or trans, and/or non-binary to play:

JOHN WESLEY POWELL—one-armed leader of the expedition and Civil War Vet. Exudes fearless leader-Intrepid-ness.

WILLIAM DUNN—hunter and trapper. Second in command but clearly thinks he should be leading. Ambitious and generally always thinks he’s right and not afraid to say it.

JOHN COLTON SUMNER—former soldier, current explorer. Practical, ready for anything, get it done ultimate adventurer.

OLD SHADY- Powell’s older brother, Civil War vet. Gruff silent type. Sees everything. Doesn’t say as much. But he sings.

BRADLEY—lieutenant, manic with youth. Ever hopeful, eager, adventure ready, He is determined to keep up with the old pros and be a good mate.

O.G. HOWLAND—printer and hunter. Seemingly tough. Definitely irascible and mouthy. / also plays TSAUWIAT- a Ute chief.

SENECA HOWLAND—OG’s quiet little brother. Always a team, with his older brother. / also plays THE BISHOP- Tsauwiat’s wife

FRANK GOODMAN —So British, so excited. So not prepared for his fun amusement to turn into a life threatening adventure. He’s the first one to leave. / also plays MR. ASA- a desert settler

HALL—mapmaker, old soul. Smart, sharp and ready for action.

HAWKINS—the cook. Keeps it exciting. A little gossipy, a little firebrand.

NANCY – 50s-60s, a dreamer and an optimist, would have liked to have seen the world but was a dutiful wife and mother instead. Eager to have an adventure in her golden years.

CHARLIE – 50s-60s, Nancy’s husband. Straddles the line between pragmatism and pessimism, ready to settle into a restful retirement.

LESLIE – 30s-40s, a sea creature, strong, virile, and in his prime. Ready to challenge anything resembling a threat.

SARAH – 30s-40s, a sea creature, Leslie’s mate. Sociable, curious about the world around her, but loyal to Leslie.

SEEKING:

ABASIAMA UFOT - 60’s, Nigerian. A splay-footed, gap-toothed woman. Thinner Ibibio accent. Fluent in both Ibibio and English. Strong, tough, and fiercely protective of her daughters, Iniabasi and Adiagha. Feels regret about sending her daughter Iniabasi back to Nigeria to be raised by her father (Abasiama’s ex-husband) but does her best to put on a brave face.

INIABASI EKPEYOUNG – 36, Nigerian. A bow-legged, gap-toothed woman. Thicker Ibibio accent. Fluent in both Ibibio and English. Excited but also overwhelmed by her trip to America to meet her mother. Sweet, generous, and trying hard to conceal the resentment she feels towards her mother for sending her away as a child.

ADIAGHA UFOT – 30, Nigerian-American. A splay-footed, gap-toothed woman. An amalgamated accent [central Massachusetts and Ibibio]. She is fluent in English, hears Ibibio but has a very limited speaking capacity. She is diplomatic, a natural mediator, and has a good sense of humor.

THE GREAT LEAP by Lauren Yee

MANFORD - 17, male, Chinese-American. Intense, scrappy, runs into trouble, attacks the rim, with a ruthless crossover. Not tall. More Allen Iverson than Jeremy Lin.

CONNIE - 25, female, Chinese-American, Manford's cousin and UC Berkeley grad student. Level-headed, big picture. A Chris Paul/Klay Thompson type.

WEN CHANG - 43, male, Chinese, coach of Beijing University's men's basketball team. Observant, efficient. Favors three pointers over aggressive inside shots. Tim Duncan would appreciate his energy. (His English is formal, but relatively unaccented.)

SAUL - 52, male, Jewish, coach of University of San Francisco's men's basketball team. A shit-talking, shotblocking, washed up Larry Byrd.
