BREAKDOWN
Following the aftershock of the Second Great War, San Francisco’s Jewish community becomes a safe harbor for survivors of the Nazi regime. It is there we meet Rabbi Kroeller and a group of morally starved refugees as they seek to define their existence in this new tidy post-war America. A SPLINTERED SOUL explores the shades of grey between justice and mercy; the answers to which become shrouded in innocence and betrayal. As in a highly calculated game of chess, where survival is the ultimate strategy, passionate bonds are forged between strangers and one man’s soul splinters in his quest to right what has been wronged in such extraordinary times.
RABBI SIMON KROELLER – 50s, a large powerful man with a wizened, kind face. Holocaust survivor. Bearded would be great, but not a deal breaker.
JUDGE MARTIN LEVINSKY – 50s, American, somewhat of a dandy with silk kerchiefs and ties, natty sport coat, officious, superior manner.
GERTA – mid 20s - 30, good natured, attractive, sensuous in dress and manner. Polish refugee and Holocaust Survivor.
SOL – mid-late 30s, arrogant and gruff. Polish refugee and Holocaust Survivor. Same actor also plays LEO - Sadie’s American husband, American Polish Jew. Business type. Pillar of community, Gerta’s employer.
MORDECHI – mid 20s – early 30s, sweet sensitive young man, kind hearted. Polish refugee and Holocaust Survivor.
COUNTESS MINASSI – 50s, elegant, richly dressed in fur and pearls. Non-Jewish Polish aristocrat (her Polish accent may be influenced by her training in British English). Same actor also plays SADIE - early 40’s, American Jew (married to Leo), fussy, type-A personality, Gerta’s employer. Same actor also plays SARAH – Simon’s dead wife.
ELISA – early 20s, childlike, beautiful. Appears innocent and vulnerable, later we learn she is a fraud. Polish refugee.
HAROLD - early 20s, handsome, hot-headed. Elisa’s brother. Polish refugee, later we learn that he is a con man.
