Breakdown
A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY is a sweeping stage adaptation of John Irving’s novel. It tells the story of John Wheelwright and his best friend, Owen Meany, who believes that he is an instrument of God. Their lifelong friendship, and the extraordinary trajectory of Owen’s journey, is the palette for a moving examination of faith and friendship, set in the tumultuous period of 1950’s and 1960’s America.
SEAKING:
JOHN WHEELWRIGHT
30’s, plays younger throughout. He is Owen Meany's best friend, the narrator of the play. The son of Tabby Wheelwright, John is raised by the aristocratic Wheelwright family in Gravesend, New Hampshire. His religious faith is both awakened and tested by Owen’s life. He is self-reflective, angry and confused. He remains a virgin, neutered, he says, by the events of his extraordinary life.
TABITHA WHEELWRIGHT
Late 20s-early 30s. She is perky, vivacious, beautiful. She is John's mother, who keeps the identity of John's father a secret from him. Killed by a foul ball hit by Owen Meany in a Little League game, Tabby is an idealized vision of both motherhood and womanhood for young John and Owen. Must have good singing voice. (Please note: actress makes a top-nude change of clothes, facing upstage.)
MR FISH/CHIEF PIKE/DOCTOR DOLDER
50’s. He is a character man. Mr. Fish is John's neighbor, a plummy community theatre actor who loves to star in The Gravesend Players productions. Chief Pike investigates the killing of Tabby Wheelwright by Owen’s foul ball. Doctor Dolder (German accent) is a psychologist at Gravesend Academy.
HAROLD CROSBY/LARRY LISH/JARVIT BOY
Early 20’s. Harold is a flexible utility actor and an awkward put-upon youngster who gets mixed up in a disastrous Christmas pageant. Larry Lish is a rich, privileged prep school boy. The Jarvit Boy is a bitter, dangerous, lower-class teen who kills Owen Meany with a grenade.
