A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC
Fredrik Egerman: (age 45-60) A successful widowed middle-aged lawyer. Once upon a time, he had an affair with an actress named Desiree, whom he has never forgotten. He is married to the 18-year old Anne and has one son from his previous marriage, Henrik. Fredrik is a baritone with a range of Bb2 to E4.
Anne Egerman: (age 18) Fredrik's new, naive wife who, though they have been married for 11 months, is still a virgin. She does not know that she is secretly loved by her step-son, Henrik. Anne is a soprano with a range of G#3-G#5.
Henrik Egerman: (age 20-25) Fredrik’s gloomy, ignored son who is studying to become a minister. He is secretly in love with Anne, his step-mother, but temptations abound in the person of Petra, the family maid. He is a cello player, so the ability to truly play the cello is a major advantage for being cast, but it is not a requirement! Playing another non wind instrument, piano, accordion, etc. could also be an advantage. Henrik is a tenor with a vocal range of G2 to B4.
Petra: (age 20s-30s) Anne's maid and closest confidante. She is lusty, earthy, and practical about her status in life. Petra is a mezzo-soprano/alto with a range of F#3-B4.
Desiree Armfeldt: (age 35-50) An attractive, self-absorbed, once-successful actress, now touring the country-side in what is clearly not the glamorous life.” She bore her daughter, Fredrika, after an affair with Fredrik (he does not know). Like her mother, she has had many lovers and knows how to “handle” men but is getting tired of that lifestyle. Desiree is a mezzo-soprano/alto with a range of E3- B4.
Fredrika Armfeldt: (age 13-16) Desiree’s daughter by Fredrik (unbeknownst to Fredrik) she is a very sophisticated young lady who is wise beyond her years. Living with her grandmother, Madame Armfeldt, while her mother travels, she secretly longs for Desiree to settle down and assume a normal life. Fredrika is a soprano with a range of C4-Eb5.
Madame Armfeldt: (age 65+) Desiree's mother, who has had liaisons with royalty. She had many lovers over the years, making sure she secured something of monetary value from each relationship, but never truly finding love. She dispenses wisdom to her granddaughter, Fredrika, whom she cares for while Desiree is on the road. Madame is a contralto with a range of C3-F#4.
Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm: (age 30s-40s) A military man who is pompous, arrogant, & egomaniacal. He is married to Charlotte while having an affair with Desiree. Carl-Magnus is a baritone with a range of C3 to F4.
Charlotte Malcolm: (age 30s-40s) The put-upon wife of Carl-Magnus, Charlotte is fully aware of his repeated infidelities but is powerless to stop them. Childless, she has devolved into a cynical depression and is willing to take down everyone else with her. Charlotte is a mezzo-soprano/alto with a range of G3-B4.
Frid: (age 25-40) Frid is Madame Armfeldt’s butler/manservant who is attracted to Petra. He does not have a specified vocal range, but he will sing in his personal range in the group numbers along with everyone else. Frid may be played by the actor playing Mr. Lindquist, depending on casting.
The Quintet/Liebeslieder Singers: The Greek chorus of the show and a VERY important aspect of this cast. They have some of the most vocally interesting music to sing, and they may also double with some other characters. They have a number of scenes which require both vocal as well as acting skill and must be skilled at singing harmony. The include:
Mrs. Nordstrom (Any Age) Ms. Nordstrom is a soprano (B3-C6 (E6)
Mrs. Segstrom (Any Age) Ms. Segstrom is a soprano (B3-Bb5)
Mrs. Anderssen (Any Age) Ms. Anderssen is a mezzo-soprano/alto (Ab3-G5 (Bb5) Mr. Erlanson (Any Age) Mr. Erlanson is a tenor (C3-Bb4)
Mr. Lindquist (Any Age) Mr. Lindquist is a baritone (G#2-F#4)
Understudies (4): Tenor, Baritone, Soprano and Mezzo/Alto who wll play servants in the Armfeldt household and cover roles TBD.
