A HANUKKAH CAROL, OR GELT TRIP! THE MUSICAL
(NOTE: “TRACK 2 - 8” will double as multiple roles and are strong singers with great comedic timing. It is important that this story be told authentically. Seeking Jewish performers of all ethnicities.)
[“TRACK 1”/ CHAVA] She/Her, Mid/Late 20s, Jewish, Mezzo-Soprano. Our “Scroogian” protagonist; we should love to hate her, but eventually love to love her. A Jewish American millennial influencer (known online as “Vava”), obsessed with her social media empire - she has no time or energy for the real world, for actual friendships, or—least of all—for Hanukkah with her family. A hardened mean girl exterior with a tremendous capacity for vulnerability. Her bullied past has turned her heart cold, pushing away all who love her. As a result, she’s built emotional walls to protect herself. Has great comedic timing, with considerable emotional depth - and tremendous stage presence. Singing styles range from “bootleg Britney Spears” to contemporary musical theatre.
[“TRACK 2”] She/Her, 20s-40s, Jewish, Mezzo-Soprano. Doubles as various characters including DICKENSIAN ORPHAN (age 10, a plucky urchin right out of a Dickens novel! Our narrator, with an adorable cockney dialect and great comedic timing), PAST CHAVA (ages 7-21, a sweet kid, who loves Hanukkah - but when high school hits, she is left vulnerable, becoming sadly impressionable and insecure , FUTURE CHAVA (mid 60s, ruthless and angry - hated by millions, with zero privacy and zero friends)
[“TRACK 3”] She/Her, Mid/Late 20s, Jewish, Mezzo-Soprano BIPOC. Doubles as various characters including BARB KRATZYT (Chava’s childhood best friend. She’s smart, loyal, selfless, and authentically radiates warmth and kindness. A strong moral compass, her earnestness comes from a place of strength), HANUKKAH CAROLER, TEACHER, BOYS2MENSCH, etc.
[“TRACK 4”] Non-female identifying, Early/Mid 20s, Jewish, Tenor. Doubles as various characters including MIMI MARLEY (Earnestly and un-satirically a woman. Though she is larger than life, she is not meant to be a cartoon. She struts around in high platform boots, and even higher status. An entitled internet celebrity, she’s everything Chava/(“Vava”) aspires to be, and more.), HARRY (Barb’s younger brother, youthful and caring), FUTURE SCHMUCKHEAD, etc.
[“TRACK 5”] She/Her, Late 40s-60s, Jewish, Mezzo-Soprano. Doubles as various characters including CHAVA’S MOM (authentic Jewish mom vibes; she unconditionally loves her daughter), NYC PREGNANT LADY, 60'S ACTIVIST BUBBE, etc.
[“TRACK 6”] He/Him, 40s-60s, Jewish, Baritone. Doubles as various characters including CHAVA’S DAD (authentic Jewish dad vibes; a family man, who cares deeply, in his mind, like Tevye), CAVEWOMAN BUBBE, BULLY, etc.
[“TRACK 7”] She/Her, 40s-70s, Jewish, Mezzo-Soprano. Doubles as various characters including THE SPIRIT OF HANUKKAH PAST (a bubbe of a bubbe of a bubbe of a bubbe. A “Maccabubbe,” with Yente-like honesty. A “Xena-Warrior Grandma.”), BARB’S MOM (generous, warm, patient, compassionate), HANUKKAH CAROLER, etc.
[“TRACK 8”] He/Him, 40s-60s, Jewish, Baritone. Doubles as various characters including THE SPIRIT OF HANUKKAH PRESENT (AKA “The Hanukkah Fairy” – if Santa and The Tooth Fairy had a very jolly baby, this would be it), LITTLE KID, PAST SCHMUCKHEAD, BARB’S DAD, etc.
