BREAKDOWN
White Horse Theater is casting A Cavalier for Milady, a grotesque comedic portrait of society and “madness”-featuring a young woman dressed as a child who is kept house-bound by her mother with a tyrannical babysitter. The repressed “Nance” fantasizes about making love to a statue in the hall, which resembles Nijinsky. Meanwhile, The Mother and her friend Mrs. Aid are out for a night on the town with male escorts in central park. This rarely seen Williams later work will be performed in a site-specific production in the Great Hall at the historic Players Club on Gramercy Park.
Seeking:
THE MOTHER
Female (50s) Caucasian. Widowed socialite. Graceful, controlled and polished, yet fiercely manipulative. Ravenous for male attention. A Grotesque version of Amanda from The Glass Menagerie.
NANCE
Female (late 20s-early 30s). Caucasian. Mother’s adult, infantalized daughter. Dressed and treated like a little girl because she is “different,” & “obscene.” Very open and expressive of her sexual desires. Honest, emotional, fragile. Lives a sheltered, repressed, lonely life; yet a fighter with the will to cry out.
VASLAV NIJINSKY
Male (20s-30s). A Greek Adonis statue who comes to life in Nance’s imagination as famous ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. Sculpted, dancer’s body. Sensitive, intuitive, emotionally fragile, if physically strong. Excellent dancer. Ballet experience necessary. Partial nudity. Character wears only a loincloth.
