[MOTHER] - 60s+, female-identifying, Middle Eastern or South Asian. Muslim. She has lived, faced
wind, cold, heat, longing and desperation. Has fought and survived the world. Comfortable with
silences. Works as a military typist for an unnamed government. Looks far. Thinks far. Breathes close.
Exists with a sense of gusto– a sense of humor. In the play, brings a mix of textual and movement
language, movement that is not polished, but which expresses the desperation to understand another
person in the absence of words. Sings a few times to affect the story in raw ways, not a trained
performer by any means.
[SON] - 30s-40s, male-identifying. Middle Eastern or South Asian. A soldier returning to homeland
after decades. Has limited eyesight (low-vision); potentially blind. Agnostic. Looking for meaning in a
world where previous frames like nation and religion have ceased to make sense. Speaks as if he is
speaking a new language, as if he no longer has faith in language. Strong sense of smell. Deeply
invested in silences. Strong movement language.
