Much like the character Javert spends almost the entire show searching for prisoner Jean Valjean, producers of Imagination Players, a production class for teens at KD Studio Actors Conservatory, are beginning a city-wide search for an actor to portray the character Jean Valjean in their upcoming production of “Les Miserables” (school Edition).
The musical will be produced in a three week production camp beginning June 29 through July 17, Monday – Friday, 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. The performances will be July 17, 18 and 19.Composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg with a libretto by Alain Boublil, the show mixes stories of revolution with those of a paroled convict named Jean Valjean who, failing attempts to find work as an honest man with his yellow ticket of leave, breaks his parole and conceals his identity. The police inspector Javert becomes obsessed with finding Valjean. The role of Valjean is a challenging one. It spans 17 years in time, requiring a strong actor with a soaring tenor voice.
The school edition is limited to current middle school and high school students, and students who have graduated from high school in the 2009 calendar year. The search for the next Jean Valjean will culminate in an audition for the role on Saturday, May 9, at KD Studio, 2600 Stemmons Freeway, Suite 117, Dallas, TX 75207. The actor selected for the role will receive a full scholarship for the camp.Actors interested in auditioning for this role should prepare a one minute monologue and the section of “Bring Him Home” that is posted on the website www.kdstudio.com.
