Even if you’ve never muttered the words, “I do not like green eggs and ham,” the Thomaston Opera House has cooked up a treat that will certainly appeal to your tastes. A musical extravaganza filled with toe-tapping tunes, Seussical borrows its plot directly from the characters and occurrences in various Dr. Seuss children’s books. In fact, Seussical integrates the storylines from more than 20 of Seuss’ works, using each tiny town and bizarre species of creature as inspiration. The result is a production that takes the audience on an unpredictable ride through the depths of fantasy, from the miniature houses of Whoville to the wild greenery of the Jungle of Nool.

Dr. Seuss’ colorful stories of wild odysseys and exotic lands have intrigued millions and introduced countless children to the world of literature. The Thomaston Opera House is pleased to carry on Suess’ legacy with a production sure to delight the entire family, from the smallest of small to the tallest of tall!

Seussical is a musical re-imagining of Seuss’ most familiar works. The plotline follows the faithful Horton the Elephant through the misadventures made famous in “Horton Hears a Who.” While lounging on the fifteenth of May in the Jungle of Nool, Horton hears a cry for help from a tiny dust speck and pledges to keep the miniature planet of Who out of harm’s way. He is helped along the way by his lovesick neighbor Gertrude McFuzz and a wide range of whimsical characters. Among them are the mischievous Who boy, JoJo, the glamorous Mayzie La Bird, the meddlesome Wickersham Brothers, the soulful Sour Kangaroo and the honorable Judge Yertle the Turtle. Driving this fanciful tale of self-discovery and true friendship is that beloved master of imagination the cat in the Hat.

Like most of Dr. Seuss’ stories, Seussical contains a much more profound message than is obvious on the surface. The show touches on themes of loyalty, true friendship, imagination and family. Horton’s poignant ballad “Alone in the Universe”, JoJo’s magical tune “It’s Possible” and the Cat in the Hat’s jazzy “How Lucky You Are” add depth to the show while keeping viewers totally entertained.

The cast of 38 for Seussical features Dan Ringuette as the cat in the Hat, Jack Sprance as JoJo,  Keith Paul as Horton, Melissa Sheffield as Gertrude McFuzz, Mary Johnson as Mayzie LaBird, Robyn L. Colossa as Sour Kangaroo, Chuck Stango as Mr. Mayor, Jane Coughlin as Mrs. Mayor; Emily Diedrich, Lindsay Dzubay and Alyssa Fontana as the Bird Girls; Rchard McKenna, Foster Evans Reese and Nick Rollo as the Wickersham Brothers; Matt Cornish as General Ghengus Kahn Schmidt, Ken Rogers as Yertle the Turtle, and Diwan Glass as The Grinch.  The production is directed by Rick Doyle with music direction by AJ Bunel and choreography by Sharon A Wilcox.

So come join the Cat in The Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, the Whos of Whoville and more on a family musical adventure for the young and not so young alike!  Let your toes tap, your fingers snap and your imagination run wild with Seussical (the Musical) at the Thomaston Opera House, 158 Main Street, Thomaston, on July 25, 31, August 1 & 7, 2009 at 8:00pm and July 26, August 2, 8* & 9, 2009 at 2:00pm.  Special Saturday Matinee on August 8, 2009.  Tickets are $22.00 & $20.00 for adults and $19.00 & $17.00 for students/seniors.
