The Western Reserve Playhouse Announces Groundbreaking Reimagining of "Children of Eden"
The Western Reserve Playhouse is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking reinterpretation of Children of Eden, the acclaimed musical by Stephen Schwartz (composer of Wicked) and John Caird. Running from August 2 to August 17, 2024, this production features a never-before-seen take on this beloved community theatre staple. With nontraditional casting and a fresh narrative exploring generational trauma and lineage, this reimagining blends the historical charm of our venue with bold, innovative choices and transformative storytelling.
SYNOPSIS:
Children of Eden spans two biblical stories from the book of Genesis. Act 1 retells the story of Adam and Eve, following Adam (Tim Schuerger) and Eve (Kelly Pilkenroth), guided by Father (Dennis Runkle), from the Garden of Eden to their exile, where sons Cain (Roman Novosel) and Abel (Nate Zadzilka) encounter tragic conflict. Act 2 tells the story of Noah's Ark, where this same cast portrays direct descendants of their lineage many generations later.
Traditionally staged as an epic biblical spectacle, director Braelin Andrzejewski has reimagined this production as a family-centered narrative set in a space reminiscent of WRP’s own attic, filled with 170 years of historical props and costumes. Reflecting the season's theme, "What's Past is Prologue," this unique setting highlights the theatres inherited gifts and challenges, and invites the audience to see their own family reflected in the timeless tales of Adam, Eve, and Noah.
The production stars WRP veteran Dennis Runkle, whose memorable performances in Shadowlands, Jekyll & Hyde, and countless other productions have made him a beloved fixture on our stage. Runkle's extensive experience and heartfelt presence breathe life into the role of Father, making the character both familiar and compelling. Joining him is newcomer Kelly Pilkenroth, making a triumphant return to the stage after a 14-year hiatus. Pilkenroth’s powerhouse voice and remarkable range shine as she transitions from the innocent Eve to the resilient Mama Noah, delivering a performance rich in vocal prowess and emotional depth.
Also new to our stage, Roman Novosel (they/them), a nonbinary drag performer and Euclid native, takes on the unique doubling of Cain and Yonah. Traditionally, these characters are played by different actors (a male and a female), but Novosel’s portrayal of both the headstrong boy Cain and the resilient ingenue Yonah highlights their exceptional versatility and underscores the powerful generational themes of the show. This nontraditional casting marks a significant milestone for representation and innovation at WRP, and introduces a fresh, unprecedented take on the production.
