National Dance Institute (NDI) is seeking theater technicians to join our production team in support of our world-class teachers and musicians as they mount celebratory performances in almost 50 NYC area public elementary schools. Installations include basic sound, lighting and backdrops. The ideal candidate shares our commitment to excellence, and deeply appreciates the importance of the arts as part of every child’s education.
Summary:
Production Technician reports directly to the Technical Director/Producer and works closely with our Teaching Artists in a variety of school settings in the NYC area. Work requires a strong knowledge of sound equipment and principles (wireless mics, PA systems, live music), a general knowledge of theatrical equipment, safety, and procedures, and the ability to lift up to 50lbs. Valid driver’s license helpful. This hourly, seasonal work runs weekdays, December through February, and April through June. Days start very early and often run into the evening. Must possess good time management skills and punctuality for the early calls, and bring a cooperative, collaborative, positive, and calm-under-pressure energy to the team. There will be other intermittent opportunities throughout the year.
Responsibilities:
• Provide sound, lighting and general production support for performances in NDI partner schools;
• Transport, set up and strike of production equipment as needed to supplement school equipment;
• Work with NDI and school staff to clear and prepare the stage and auditorium for the performance;
• Be vigilant about safety on stage and around the entire auditorium; make appropriate adjustments;
• Errands, including travel to locations and vendors outside NYC;
• Other duties or special projects as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
• General knowledge of theatrical systems, equipment and procedures; strong ability with sound preferred;
• Ability to work independently, adapt quickly and solve technical issues with minimal supervision;
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds;
• Certified, or willing to become certified, in First Aid/CPR/AED;
• Valid driver’s license preferred, but not mandatory.
Experience/Education:
The right candidate will have a minimum of a high school diploma, a personal focus in technical theater and/or production management, and be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and experience to make a positive contribution to the organization.
