Alfred Uhry's DRIVING MISS DAISY Runs 4/3 - 4/19 At Village Players Performing Arts Center

Opening in Village Players Performing Arts Center's Blackbox Theatre, Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer-winning play, Driving Miss Daisy, runs April 3-April 19, 2009.

Under the direction of the Village Players Theatre’s Artist Director, Carl O’cchipinti, this charming play tells the story of the relationship between an elderly Southern Jewish widow and her African-American chauffeur.  Over their twenty five years together, spanning 1948-1973, their friendship evolves as they face aging and complex social issues of the time. Written by Alfred Uhry, he won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work.

According to Director and VPT Artistic Director, Carl O’cchipinti, "This play looks beyond the surface of prejudice; it’s not just about race but the many other ways we judge people – looks, religion, education, social status, etc.”  Throughout the course of the play, Daisy learns about herself, initially believing she ‘s not prejudice, she realizes that her actions are.”  Additionally, “when the main characters, Miss Daisy and Hoke, let their guard down, they discover they are the same and really love each other.”

Appearing as Miss Daisy is Betty Scott-Smith, a Village Players Theatre ensemble member who recently appeared as Carrie Watts in A Trip to Bountiful and Sister Clarissa in Over The Tavern.   Renardo Johnson returns to the VPT as Hoke, the chauffer.  Renardo recently made an impression in the their production of The Full Monty.  Also in the cast is Jack Crowe a Village Players Board Member and favored actor.

Driving Miss Daisy performs April 3 – April 19, 2009.  Fridays & Saturdays are at 7:30 PM and Sundays are at 2:30 PM. Tickets are $20 for General Admission.

Drivng Miss Daisy is presented in the Blackbox Theater of the Village Players Performing Arts Center located at 1010 Madison St., Oak Park. Plenty of parking is available on the street.
