The significance of the new production of Gypsy is not lost on Joy Woods. This is the first time in Broadway history that the central characters- Rose, Louise, and June- are all being played by Black performers.
"[The show] about just the most human experiences and how we reckon with truth and what happens when our dreams are deferred or when they come true," Woods explained during a recent visit to Good Morning America. "[The fact] that we're able to tell it through this lens now is really special and I'm just happy to be a part of it."
During the interview, Woods also encouraged young and up-and-coming performers to follow their dreams and pursue what they love- even if peers are not supportive. "I would have never learned how to do riffs and runs had I not annoyed everyone on the school bus!" she noted. Watch the full interview now.
